At the beginning of the New Year, Dr. Xuesong Gao from the School of Education in the University of New South Wales, Australia, was invited to give an academic lecture entitled “Self-regulated Strategic Writing for Academic Studies in an English-Medium-Instruction Context” in lecture hall 4502. The lecture was hosted by Dr. Lei Xiao with lively atmosphereand positive interaction, and the teachers and students benefited a lot.

Dr.Gao xuesong lectured with humor
Dr. Gao Xuesong first introduced his doctoral thesis, humorously narrating the tortuous experience of writing the doctoral thesis, which aroused the laughter of the teachers and students. He emphasized for many times that academic work is not easy and should be practical and serious. Dr. Kao then shared a new concept in the field of second language acquisition. Some scholars questioned the concept of previously recognized Learning Strategy. They proposed a new concept called Self-regulated Strategy, which greatly challenged students’ previous cognition and broadened their horizons. Finally, Dr. Gao Xuesong, based on practiceand using his own research as the media, showed the influence of different learning strategies on students’ writing ability. Hisresearch selected two groups of experimental subjects as the control groups, and found that the top students and the relatively poor students would adopt different learning strategies in writing. Afterinterviews, research and analysis, he proposed practical methods for teaching to help students improve their writing ability.

After the presentation, the teachers and students gained a lot, responded actively and asked many questions. Dr. Gao gave detailed answers to the students, and also answered the teachers’ questions about the publication of academic papers. In addition, this lecture provided students with a new perspective in the field of second language acquisition, which subverted the traditional cognition and was worth deep appreciating and studying.
