October 14, 2017, the “FLTRP Cup” English Writing and Reading Preliminary Contest of 2017 was held successfully atin South China University of Technology (SCUT). Since its launch on September 15, this contest has received a warm response from the undergraduates and postgraduates of SCUT. More than 200 students of all majors and all grades have participated in this activity. Under the leadership and with the greatprodigious support of the teachers from the School of Foreign Languages and the College English Teaching Center, our preliminary contest has been organized and executedin order with and has received great success. The ose outstanding students that have been selected from this preliminary contest will attend the semi-finals of Guangzhou Division atin the end of October.

The “FLTRP Cup” English Writing and Reading Contest is jointly hosted by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, College English Teaching and Research Association of China and ELT Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education. This writing contest started in 2012, aiming to promote the written English writing teaching, by improvinge students’ writing skills as well as to help facilitatend the reform and development of university level written English iting teaching of universities. The reading contest started in 2015 to provide college students with reading opportunities and a self-challenge stage.

The contest for this time has added several key elements including critical thinking and creativity to enrich the out of -class activities of our school students in order to , stimulate the learning enthusiasm of the students in English writing and reading. What’s more, it has can also be helpful in improving students’ comprehencomprehensionsive ability and expanding international vision for students.
