Professor Ginny of University of Northern Colorado gave a lecture on “Current Trends on Second and Foreign Language Education in the U.S.” for the School of Foreign Languages of South China University of Technology (SCUT) on October 27th. The special lecture was hosted by Professor Cai Jinting, and Professor Wu Jianguo with many students participating.

Professor Ginny giving her lecture
At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Ginny shared her own story when she just arrived in Canada - She said to an assistant “May I have a cup of hot milk please?”, but the assistant gave her a cup of iced milk. Because in Canada milk is ordinarily iced while coffee is ordinarily served hot. Through this experience Professor Ginny sensed the cultural difference in different languages.
Later on, she introduced two state standards for English teachers in the U.S. - TESOL and ACTFL and explained 5C standards for foreign language education - Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities.
