The SCUT 2016 English Academic Forum ----The 3rd Session: Language Transfer and Translation Studies

    The third session of the SCUT English Academic Forum was held on July 8th. The theme for the day was “Language Transfer and Translation Studies” with three professors and five graduate students presenting their academic views.
    Professor Cai Jinting opened the final day of the forum by giving a lecture on “The Recent Progress of Theories and Methods on Language Transfer Study”. Professor Cai focused on the latest development of SLA and its research gaps. He also made known various opinions about multidimensional dynamic theoretical framework of language transfer and the framework of comparative-inductive method. In the end, he attaches great importance to scientific method in academic study.

    Afterward, Professor Li Yingyuan invited students to read the ancient Chinese prose Peach Blossom Spring together. Subsequently, Professor Li delivered a lecture on the translation of the prose, and discussed several important key points of the translation with students.

    The final teacher speaking was Dr. Lei Xiao, and her topic was “Pattern Transformation in the Study of Second Language Writing Strategies”. In Professor Lei’s lecture, she articulated several effective strategies for improving student writing skills.

    In closing the forum, five graduate students presented their work in this area of academic study. The first student speaker was Yan Xiaomeng and her presentation topic was “The Co-occurrence of Relative Clause and Quantifier in Chinese from a Perspective of SLA: A Case Study on South Korean Students in China”. She chose a rather different perspective to study SLA, which substantially impressed the audience.

    The next three students utilized literary texts as their study subject. A lecture given by Yu Le was entitled “Creative Treason in Howard Goldblatt's Translation of Red Sorghum”. Yu displayed different kinds of Chinese sayings in the novel and explained her academic views on them.

    Gan Mei combined research methods of corpus with translation theories, and made a presentation on “A Study of Translators’ Style Based on Corpus: A Case Study of Four English Translation Versions of On the Teacher”. It was a rather informative presentation.

    The last student Xie Shixiong gave a presentation on “A Study of Cultrual Misreading in Literary Translation: A Case Study of Howard Goldblatt”. In illustrating his academic point of view, he provided several interesting and revealing examples. His presentation also marked a successful conclusion of the SCUT English Academic Forum.

    The three-day forum provided a highly desirable platform for both educators and students to communicate effectively and efficiently about current developments within their area of academia. In twenty-two (22) lectures, expert speakers presented academic opinions for the edification of the audience. The discussion element of the presentations stimulated a very productive frank and focused exchange of academic knowledge and insight. The success of this forum shows the rather favorable learning atmosphere apparent in the School of Foreign Languages of SCUT.
