The SCUT 2016 English Academic Forum----The 2nd Session: Discourse and Pragmatics

   The second session of the SCUT English Academic Forum was held on July 7th. The theme for the day was “Discourse and Pragmatics” with three professors and five graduate students presenting their academic views.
   Beginning the forum for the day, Professor Xu Shenghuan gave a lecture on “A Study of Non-Literal Meaning in the Perspective of Identity”. Subsequently Professor Xu shared his academic accomplishments and sentiments about the topic with the audience answering all the questions methodically and giving several suggestions.

    Afterward, Professor Wu Jianguo presented his view of good discourse analysis saying “we should pay attention to the construction of a national discourse system and the spread of Chinese culture; our academic study should solve practical problems and hold humanistic care.” Then, Professor Wu delivered a lecture on “Recontextualization and the Transformation of Meanings in the Process of Discourse Circulation”. This lecture raised a heated and detailed discussion.

   The final teacher speaking was Doctor Rong Rong, and her topic was “A Model Study of Flashback in Literature Works from the Perspective of Cognitive Stylistics”. Dr. Rong displayed many examples in her presentation which made her views become crystal clear to the audience.

     Then, five graduate students presented their work in this area of academic study. The first student speaker was Chen Congying, giving a presentation on “The Review and Prospect of Critical Discourse Analysis Studies Based on the 70 Literatures in 2015”.

   The next student presenter was Li Xinmeng and her study was based on her major. As a student of MTI, she wrote a paper based on translation practices: “Recontextualization and Enterprise Cultural Transmission: A Case Study on Websites Translation of Fortune Global 500”. Ms. Li hoped this study will help enterprises publicize their culture better.

    Xiao Xiao’s topic was “Recontextualization and the Transformation of Meanings in New Media Discourse: A Case Study on Bulletins of Microblog”. She chose a new study perspective according to current technology trends on the Internet.

    The last two speakers were graduate students Feng Ting and Zhong Cuixia. Feng’s lecture topic was “Analyzing the Spread of Traditional Chinese Culture from the Perspective of Intertextuality: A Case Study of Lin Yutang’s Translation”. Zhong’s was “The Construction Effects of Communicative Metadiscourse on the Consensus of Academic Discourse”.
    In the question and answering part of the presentations, students raised various questions regarding discourse and pragmatics through enthusiastic discussion with professors.
