The SCUT 2016 English Academic Forum----The 1st Session: Cognition and Semantics

    In order to helpstudents and faculty learn more aboutcurrent developments in the Englishlanguage academic field, the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) of SCUT held a three-dayEnglish academic forum duringJuly 6-8, 2016 with teachers and students presenting their research findings in twenty-two (22)lectures. The dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Professor Zhong Shuneng, as well as many other scholars and students attended this English academic forum.

    The highlight of theopening day was a lecture by Professor Zhang Jingyuentitled “Cognitive Models of Metonymy, Semantic Salience Hierarchy Model and Second Language Acquisition of OverseasStudent on Verb-Resultative Construction”. The lecture deepened the understanding and awareness of participants in these academic areas.Later Professor Zhong Shuneng made an excellent speech entitled “Does It Belong to Bi-object Construction or Verb-complement Structure?”. The speech was well received, bring with it a richer comprehension of Chinese sentences and arose lively discussions among attendances.

In the afternoon, Dr. Xuyin presented his research on “Decision Styles of CET4 Composition’s Graders” with specific data analysis and a strict academic proof, showing a well-organized and highly logical structure of a purposeful academic paper.

    Finally, after professor presentations, graduate student speakers Yang Liru, Sumeng, Xufang and Zheng Wenhui presented their research findings. The academic forum ended with cordial discussions.

The primary purpose of this academic forum was to provide teachers and students with an opportunity to broaden knowledge about linguistics and language study. Consequently, through various lectures, discussions and academic debates, participants experienced discernible improvements in critical thinking and academic consciousness.
