Prof. Wang Wenbin, assistant principal to Beijing Foreign Studies University, as well as a committee member of Translator’s Association of China, came to SCUT on Dec. 25 to deliver a speech of “An Exploration into the Different Spatial and Temporal Idiosyncracies between Chinese and English”. Students of School of Foreign Languages attended the lecture hosted by Prof. Wu Jianguo.

He began his speech from the perspective of the history of the Chinese language and the English language. Chinese is space-oriented while English is time-oriented. Furthermore, he developed his speech in a very humorous way and demonstrated facts by many vivid comparisons. Prof. Wang provided many original ideas relevant to both differences between words and grammar, and a comparison of idiomatic phrases with classic and typical examples was made. When his speech came to an end, Prof. Wang answered a lot questions about application to projects supported by National Fund of Social and Philosophical Science. The lecture ended in a warm and cordial atmosphere. Both teachers and students are believed to benefit a lot from his speech.
