Professor Wang Ning, director of the Comparative Literature and Cultural Study Center in Tsinghua University, gave a lecture on Translation from the Perspective of Interdisciplinary in the School of Foreign Languages of South China University of Technology (SCUT) on December 24.

    
Starting with the definition of translation put forward by Roman Jakobson, he stated his concerns about the drastic change in people’s reading habit and the role of translation in it. Later on, he introduced the redefinition of translation in seven distinct perspectives: 1) Translation as the transformation of same language from ancient form to contemporary form ; 2) Translation as the transformation between two different textual word; 3) Translation as decoding and explaining; 4) Translation as image interpretation; 5) Translation as transformation between image and language; 6) Translation as the adaptation and recreation from reading material to performing script; 7) Translation as cross-media interpretation.

At the end of the lecture, both students and teachers from our school discussed about Wang’s opinions and raised some questions according to their own knowledge, to which were responded by Wang’s attentive answers.
Professor Wang is also a foreign academician from Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe).
