On the afternoon of October 22nd, Liu Zhengguang, Professor from Hunan University paid a visit to School of Foreign Languages, SCUT and he gave us a lecture on “De-categorization of Language and its Theory and Application”. Professor Zhong Shuneng, Associate Professor Liu Xiqin as well as graduates were present at the lecture.


At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Zhong Shuneng briefly introduced Professor Liu Zhengguang. As a forerunner in the field of de-categorization, Professor Liu has done many researches on cognitive linguistics, language acquisition and foreign language teaching. He has published more than70 papers, among which more than 40 papers are published in CSSCI journals. Currently Professor Liu is vice president of China Cognitive Linguistics Association and Dean of College of Foreign Languages and International Studies of Hunan University.


In his lecture, Professor Liu gave a comprehensive explanation to the definition, characters, mechanisms and the theoretical significance of language de-categorization. His explanation was well received for his vivid language, sharp mind and abundant examples.
He also expressed his expectations on the graduates. He said that good habits and careful observations are essential to academic researches. As freshmen in academic research, graduates should form the habit of accumulating knowledge in daily life.
Professor Liu’s lecture impressed the audience very much. The new thinking model of language de-categorization broadened the horizons of the audience. Professor Liu’s expereience also inspires the students a lot.
