  The speaker: Professor Zhu Chunshen

On the afternoon of June 19, Zhu Chunshen, professor ofCity University of Hong Kong, gave us an academic lecture on “Translation Teaching in the Ageof Computer: Theory, Practice and Technology”. By virtue of displaying the distance-teachingsystem of translation between English and Chinese, Professor Zhu introduced ushow to combine theory, practice with computer technology in translationteaching.

First of all, Prof. Zhu shared with us his new insight into translationtheories. Most of the methods or skills translators applied were fromexperience, lacking systematic and theoretical training based on text-analysis.Prof. Zhu and his team created an original set of distance-teachingsystem of translation between English and Chinese by combining multi-disciplinessuch as translation studies, and corpus into computer science, IT and AT.

Prof.Zhu demonstrated this system’s operation mode and illustrated its markingprinciples. Learners can study translation with the help of raw corpora, marking, practice, special part, extending reading, headword retrieving, andreference books on the basis of marking words.

The lecture given by Prof. Zhu has an important and guiding significanceto the construction of our school’s translation laboratory and translationteaching study.
