On December 26th, Prof. Zhang Meifang from Macao University delivered a lecture entitled “Text typology, translation skopos and strategies”. The lecture was hosted by Dr. Zhu Xianlong. Present at the lecture were Prof. Zhong Shuneng, Prof. Han Jinglong, Prof. Liu Jianbo, Prof. Luo Shiping along with a large number of other teachers and postgraduates.
Prof. Zhang started her lecture with an overview of the different theoretical domains in translation studies. She elaborated on the skopos theory and illustrated three kinds of text typologies put forward by Katharina Reiss with interesting examples of public slogans, news headlines and classroom teaching practice. Prof. Zhang highlighted the application of text typology in translation practice, and specified the interplay between translation strategies and text typologies. During the Q&A section, Prof. Zhang answered the questions raised by the audience. Her insights into translation theory and practice broadened the audience’s academic horizons.
Along with the lecture was the opening ceremony for the foundation of the Research Institute of Translation Studies attached to School of Foreign Languages. The ceremony was attended by Prof. Zhang Meifang, Dr. Chen Dinggang, Secretary General of The Translation Association of Guangdong Province, teachers and postgraduates from SFL. The Research Institute is established with the aim of integrating the academic resources of SFL and promoting the development of translation studies.
