On the morning of Sept. 9th, 2013, a welcome meeting was held to welcome freshmen of the School of Foreign Languages(SCUT)in the southern campus. Liu Caigang hosted the meeting and many other leaders, full-time and part-time counselors, class teachers of SFL and all the new students attended the meeting.

Zuo Hao,the Party Secretary of SFL, extended a warm welcome to all the freshmen. He said that “Learning at university is a new starting point. We must learn how to manage our time efficiently. We need to pay attention to overall quality. English and computer courses are important ones. We have chance to select a second major if necessary. As for learning, it is essential to lay a solid foundation. We can find our personal interests in spare time and develop them vigorously by joining   associations on campus. This can be a good choice. Today you are proud of SCUT and SCUT is to be proud of you tomorrow!”

Next, Zhong Shuneng, Dean of SFL, made an introduction to SFL, which included three parts in general—great buildings, great masters and great truth. He suggested freshmen to have an overall understanding of the university, and encouraged them to be conscientious, confident and motivated, because perseverant people, according to him, were easier to be successful. He also expected them to try to be versed in listening, speaking, reading and writing. According to him, eloquence was based on daring to speak loudly and daring to lose face. What’s more, Professor Zhong emphatically pointed out that we were proud that Qin Xiubai, a famous linguist and nation-wide reputed teacher, works in our school. He also told the stories of great masters like Ji Xianlin, Qian Zhongshu, and so on, which surely helped all the freshmen make up their minds to master English or Japanese.

Li Yun, head of English Department, and Jin Hua, head of Japanese Department, introduced the general information about the two majors respectively. Both of them emphasized that the importance in learning a foreign language well is to practice every day.If one needs to lay a solid foundation in language, he must be aware of the different features of the majors. The welcome meeting came to an end in the warmest applause.
