Professor Carlos Guedes Soares from University of Lisbon visited the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation of South China University of Technology

On January 24, 2025, Carlos Guedes Soares, who is academician of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering, outstanding professor of the Instituto Superior Técnico at the University of Lisbon, and recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award, visited the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation at South China University of Technology (SCUT). He had an exchange with the teachers and students from the discipline of naval architecture and ocean engineering. Chen Chaohe and Jiao Jialong from the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation, as well as Guo Xiangfeng from the School of Marine Science and Engineering participate the exchange meeting.

During the exchange meeting, Jiao Jialong introduced the basic information of School of Civil Engineering and Transportation and the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering of SCUT, Guo Xiangfeng introduced the basic information of the School of Marine Science and Engineering of SCUT. Carlos Guedes Soares introduced the basic information of the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) at the University of Lisbon and his visiting plan.

Then, Jiao Jialong and Chen Chaohe introduced their latest research progress in ship hydrodynamics and hydroelastic response, floating offshore wind power platforms, etc. They had a lively discussion and exchange. Carlos Guedes Soares pointed out that the two universities have common research interests and foundations in various research directions such as ocean environment simulation, ship hydrodynamics, ship structural mechanics, and marine new energy equipment, and they have already published nearly 10 co-author international journal papers.

Carlos Guedes Soares also visited the laboratories of ship model towing tank, nearshore engineering tank of SCUT. He spoke highly of the experimental equipment and conditions in the university. He also reached a preliminary cooperation intention with SCUT on experimental equipment and data sharing plan. He looks forward to further strengthening cooperation and exchanges between the two universities in the future, jointly promoting technological innovation and development in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering, and contributing to the progress of the industry.
