On the morning of September 19, 2024, Professor Lihai Zhang from the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at the University of Melbourne was invited to deliver an academic lecture titled Infrastructure Asset Protection and Management for a Sustainable Future. The event took place in the Lecture Hall of Building 7 and was organized by the Department of Construction Management and co-hosted by the Construction Management Society. Professor Yuhong Ling served as the moderator, with Professor Hui Yan (Head of the Department) and Professor Xiaochun Luo (Deputy Head) attending the session along with nearly 100 faculty members and students.

Professor Zhang began by introducing the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at the University of Melbourne, followed by an overview of his current research projects and academic journey. He discussed his collaborative work on fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and mass transport in porous media—covering both fundamental studies and practical applications. These include advancements in infrastructure asset protection, such as improving the corrosion resistance and fire performance of construction materials.

He then presented his innovative research on biomimetic materials and their engineering applications. A key case study was also shared, highlighting collaboration with local government agencies in Melbourne on developing industry guidelines for mitigating hailstorm damage in the construction sector. This example clearly demonstrated the full process of translating technical innovation into applied and commercial outcomes. Finally, Professor Zhang introduced the University of Melbourne’s latest research efforts in structural health monitoring of transportation infrastructure using advanced technologies such as infrared thermography, ground-penetrating radar, and drones.

Following the lecture, an in-depth discussion was held between Professor Zhang and participating faculty and students. The event deepened attendees’ understanding of the University of Melbourne and broadened their perspective on cutting-edge research directions in the infrastructure field. It also offered insight into the challenges behind successful research translation and implementation. Professor Zhang expressed his hope for future academic engagement with the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation and looked forward to broader, more frequent, and productive collaboration between the two institutions.
