Good news! Huang Yixing, a doctoral candidate of grade 2015 in the department of engineering mechanics, school of civil and transportation engineering at South China University of Technology, has won the 2019 award of Excellent Doctoral Dissertations from the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (there are only five award winners each year in China, see http://www.cstam.org.cn/article/202241.html). Dr. Huang Yixing is a student of the Engineering Mechanics Innovation Class of Grade 2011 and a doctoral student of grade 2015. His tutor is Academician Fang Daining, chair professor of South China University of Technology. This award is not only a breakthrough achievement in the training of mechanics talents in our school, but also an important performance of the superiority of the training mode of innovative classes in our school.
The title of the award-winning doctoral dissertation is Material-structure-function Integrated Design, Fabrication and Characterization of Thin Meta-structure with Broadband Microwave Absorption and Effective Load Bearing . In this paper, the meta-structuralization preparation, design and optimization of electromagnetic stealth materials are systematically studied, and the theoretical, simulation and experimental studies are carried out at multiple levels in the aspects of the mechanical bearing function of thin electromagnetic stealth meta-structure and the fusion design of broadband microwave absorbing function. Focusing on the concepts of the integration of material, structure and function of micro/nano electromagnetic double-loss composites, the researches and achievements in optimization algorithm software development, theoretical model development, material preparation, performance testing, structural design, functional fusion, mechanism simulation and other aspects have been obtained. Corresponding results have been published in Carbon, Composites Science Technology, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, Optics Letters and other top journals in the field of mechanics, composites and optics.

As a student of the Engineering Mechanics Innovation Class, Dr. Huang Yihang recalled, Under the long-term training of the 3+1+4 mode of the Engineering Mechanics Innovation Class, I acquired a solid foundation of mathematical mechanics, which provided great help for the subsequent interdisciplinary research. Engineering Mechanics Innovation Class has good teaching resources, scientific research resources, external exchange resources. During the undergraduate study, the Engineering Mechanics Innovation Class will provide each student with a tutor, and students can directly enter the tutor's research group for research works, so that students can have the opportunites to contact the front-line scientific research in advance, accumulate scientific research experience, carry out scientific research training in advance, and provide preheating for the future master's and doctor's research. I think the training mode of Engineering Mechanics Innovation Class is very advanced, which can help students realize the real mechanics disciplines and a lot of useful scientific research techniques. Many seniors and classmates of mine in the class have achieve early academic success. I believe this kind of training mode can also be applied and spread for references to talents cultivation of other subjects.
