On December 26th, the 2020 annual work conference of the Teaching Steering Committee on Transportation Majors for Undergraduate Higher Education in Guangdong Province was successfully held in South China University of Technology. The meeting was hosted by the Teaching Steering Committee on Transportation Majors for Undergraduate Higher Education in Guangdong Province and organized by School of Civil Engineering and Transportation of South China University of Technology. The members attending the meeting includes Yuan Yanqing, Vice President of Guangzhou Maritime University, Director of Provincial Teaching Steering Committee on Transportation Majors, Tang Qiangrong, Vice President of Guangzhou Maritime University, Secretary General of the Teaching Steering Committee on Transportation Majors, and approximately 30 other members of the Teaching Steering Committee from about 20 undergraduate colleges and universities and enterprises in Guangdong Province.

At the opening ceremony, Su Cheng, assistant principal of South China University of Technology, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the university. Huang Yong, a member of the National Teaching Steering Committee on Transportation Majors in Higher Education under The Ministry of Education, and Cai Qiwen, president of Guangdong ITS Association, delivered their speeches. Tang Qiang Rong, secretary-general of the Teaching Steering Committee, made a summary of the work in 2020.
During the speech, Su Cheng gave an overview of our university and the development of the transportation major to the participants. He hoped that the experts could provide valuable suggestions for the construction and development of the transportation major in our university while taking the pulse for the development of the transportation major for undergraduate higher education in Guangdong Province.

Speech by Huang Yong, member of the Teaching Steering Committee
Huang Yong, a member of the National Teaching Steering Committee on Transportation Majors for Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, said that the conference focused on the hot issues in the field of talent training and transportation, which is important for promoting the reform and development of higher education and improving the quality of talent training in all aspects. He emphasized that the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee’s proposal for the 14th Five-Year Plan and the 2035 Visionary Goals mentions the need to grasp the pilot construction of a strong transportation country and to stimulate the innovation and creativity of talents, and as the highest expert organization at the provincial level to study, consult, guide and promote undergraduate education, the Teaching Instruction Committee has a great responsibility and an arduous task. The universities must seize the opportunity and take the initiative to explore the construction path of first-class courses and majors with Guangdong characteristics.
Cai Qiwen, the President of Guangdong ITS Association, introduced the necessity and significance of the establishment of the Teaching Steering Committee on Transportation Majors for Undergraduate Higher Education in Guangdong Province and suggested that the Teaching Steering Committee on Transportation Majors should communicate with the competent departments of transportation and leading enterprises in the industry regularly to keep abreast of the development of the industry and the demand for professional talents, to guide the schools concerned to train professional talents in a targeted manner. Tang Qiang Rong, the Secretary General of the Teaching Steering Committee, made a summary report on the work of the Teaching Steering Committee in 2020 and proposed the work vision and plan of the Committee in 2021.
In the session of First-class professions, first-class courses, Professor Hu Mingwei of Shenzhen University made a report entitled Construction of the Shenzhen University’s Undergraduate Major in Traffic Engineering, and Professor Feng Ping of Shenzhen University of Technology made a report on Shenzhen University of Technology's Four Creations Practical Teaching in Transportation.

Ma Yingying from School of Civil Engineering and Transportation of South China University of Technology gave a presentation entitled Construction and reflection of first-class courses - taking Traffic Design as an example. She introduced the exploration and practical experience of South China University of Technology in terms of teaching environment construction and teachers’ teaching methods from the perspective of the teaching reform, including the initial intention of developing the course thinking and government teaching, teaching planning, development methods, evaluation mechanism, countermeasures and other research and reflection on new teaching methods, advocating that higher education should return to classroom teaching and vigorously promote the high-quality and high-level development of teaching in higher education institutions.
Professor Teng Xianbin from Guangzhou Maritime University made a presentation entitled Discussion on the construction of curriculum system for nautical talents training based on OBE concept, introducing the practical experience of Guangzhou Maritime University in three creative talents training and teaching reform from the aspects of the overall idea, exploration practice, effectiveness characteristics and prospect of result-oriented education, and sharing the practical exploration of Guangzhou Maritime College in nautical talents training and education reform.

In the discussion session of the work plan for 2021, the members discussed the preparation plan for the First Guangdong University Traffic Technology Competition to be held by School of Civil Engineering and Transportation of South China University of Technology in 2021. The experts and scholars from universities in the province actively discussed and put forward a series of constructive suggestions.

Finally, the delegates visited South China University of Technology’s Ship and Sea Laboratory. They carefully checked the environment and equipment of the laboratories and inquired about the usage of each type of laboratory, while they were very interested in the new equipment and teaching methods in the laboratories of South China University of Technology.
The annual work conference of the Teaching Steering Committee on Transportation Majors for Undergraduate Higher Education in Guangdong Province is an important step to implement the spirit of the National Education Conference, the spirit of the National Conference on Undergraduate Education, and to improve the quality of education and technology training of talents in universities, which laid a solid foundation for further improving the quality of talent training for the transportation major for undergraduate universities in Guangdong Province.
