Congraduation! The "TongTu Road" Team Won the Gold Medal of the 12th "Challenge Cup" National College Student Business Plan Competition

On November 28 of 2020, the final competition of the 12th Challenge Cup National College Student Business Plan Competition was held at the Northeast Forestry University in Harbin. This competition is jointly sponsored by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, the Ministry of Education, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the National Federation of Students. Eight projects submitted to the competition by the South China University of Technology have been awarded 1 gold prize, 4 silver prizes, and 3 copper prizes respectively. The project titled of TongTu Road – World’s Leading Ultra-Thin Asphalt Friction Course from the School of Civil Engineer and Transportation stood out in the final competition and won the gold medal. It is the only project from our university which receives the gold prize.

1. Introduction of the Competition

The Challenge Cup National College Student Business Plan Competition is one of the innovation and entrepreneurship competitions for college students.It is jointly sponsored by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, the Ministry of Education, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the National Federation of Students. This competition is held once per two years. The purpose of this competition is to cultivate students’ innovation consciousness, inspire their creative thinking, improve their creative ability, and bring up entrepreneurial talents. Many reforms have been implemented on this year’s competition, such as setting up review of project book, social practice, defense online and other procedures. In total, 924,000 college students from 2,786 colleges and universities across the country have signed up in this competition. 179,100 projects have been submitted to the organizing committee. Only 1,400 student teams have been selected to participate the national final competition.

2. Introduction of the Project

The TongTu Road – World’s Leading Ultra-Thin Asphalt Friction Course project team was supervised by Professor Jiangmiao Yu from the Department of Road Engineering. This project aims to solve the problems of traditional asphalt friction courses, which are their high cost, short service life, environmental unfriendly, and slow construction speed. This project has successfully developed one type of high-performance ultra-thin asphalt friction course, which can effectively avoid the disadvantages of traditional asphalt friction courses. This new technology has been applied in pavement projects in many provinces, showing significant benefits  as compared with the existing technology.
