On Oct 20th and 21th, 1st Guangdong-Hong Kong- Macao Joint Symposium on the Belt and Road Strategies was held in South China University of Technology. Over 180 specialists and scholars from mainland, Hong Kong and Macao attended the symposium. Professor Min Zhu, Vice-President of SCUT, attended the opening ceremony and closing ceremony of the symposium and gave speech.

Professor Min Zhu pointed out thatthe symposium was held at exactly the right time. It is the manifestation of implementing Party Central Committee’s important strategic decision-making deployment. More importantly, it is a strong move aiming to deepen the exchange of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao universities, to achieve complementary advantages, to build and share, and thus to make progress hand in hand. SCUT persists on taking the responsibility of serving national innovation driven development, commits to providing regional economic and social development with talented people and technological support. In the future, SCUT will continue to rely on our own technological innovation and achievements, transform them into characteristics and advantages, and make full efforts to play a leading role in the construction of regional economic, social innovation driven development and other aspects. He hopes the symposium can encourage more extensive researches and provoke more in-depth thinking of the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong- Macao Greater Bay Area.

Some honoured guests are giving keynote speeches

The theme of the forum is enhancing the advantages of the Greater Bay Area through better amalgamation and complementarity. Professor Yongnian Zheng, Institute of Public Policy, SCUT, shared his opinion about how to build the Greater Bay area as a national strategy, how to serve the sustainable development of national economy, how to promote national reunification, and how to play a leading role in international community. Professor Chen Lin, Associate Dean and Chair Professor, School of Economics and Finance, The University of Hong Kong, put forward that in connection with the current financial gap, it was essential to integrate financial resources in the Greater Bay Area, expand source of funding, and share construction and development achievement, based on the survey of investment and financing needs of countries participating in the Belt and Road initiative. Professor Ming Lin, Chief Engineer, General Manager and Chief Engineer, Project Management Department for Island and Tunnel Project of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, shared the construction practices of how to use China’s infrastructure technology to solve the world-class problem: Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Island and Tunnel Project.

In addition, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao experts and scholars shared their experience and views from different fields and perspectives on the Belt and Road’s relevant strategies, policy planning, financial and trade, transportation and infrastructure construction, legal coordination mechanism and so on. They talked freely about the responsibilities and missions Guangdong-Hong Kong- Macao Greater Bay Area in the Belt and Road strategic decision, and discussed the direction and ideas of amalgamation and complementarity of the Greater Bay Area.

This forum was jointly organized by the South China University of Technology, the University of Hong Kong and the University of Macau. It is one of the theme activities of the school to commemorate the return of Hong Kong to the mainland and is included in the 'World Cities Day' series launched by Guangzhou Ministry of Housing and Development.
