Title: Research Progress in Resilient and Sustainable Steel and Steel-Concrete Composite Structures
Speaker: Dr. ZhiChao Lai (Purdue University , USA)
Time: Wednesday, May 17, 2017, 10:00 a.m.
Venue: Room 7201,Building No.7,WuShan Campus

Contents: This presentation will discuss recent research progress in steel and steel-concrete composite structures. The following five topics will be discussed: (i) steel-concrete composite special moment frame and its components (concrete-filled steel tube columns, wide flange steel beams, and beam-to- column moment connections), (ii) progressive collapse analysis of steel bridge systems, (iii) seismic retrofit of steel structures, (iv) coupled steel-concrete composite plate shear walls for high-rise buildings, and (v) steel-concrete composite bridges. The focus will be on the first topic, while the other four topics will be only briefly introduced. A 3-step methodology will be discussed in detail, i.e., review existing research and identify gaps, address gaps and further understand the behavior, and propose design recommendations. The conducted research has significant impact on the design of resilient and sustainable steel and steel-concrete composite structures, and the application of these systems in civil infrastructures including high-rise buildings, bridges, and nuclear power plants.
