Shortly after Jian Wurong, a postgraduate student in his third year from the Innovation class of Engineering Mechanics, surprised the public by publishing six SCI journal papers in one year, Ma Dongpeng, a fourth-year undergraduate in the Innovation class of Engineering Mechanics, finished a research paper and got it published before his graduation in Construction and Building Materials, which is a prestigious international journal in the field of Civil Engineering and Construction Technology.

The paper entitled “Dynamic response of expanded polystyrene concrete during low speed impact” experienced rigorous peer-review and revision according to the comments. It was accepted and formally released on line in June 2016. The hardcopy version will be published in September 2016.

Ma Dongpeng entered the Innovation class of Engineering Mechanics, the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation in 2012 and started his research from his third year in the Damage Mechanics group led by Prof. Tang Liqun. Under supervision of Prof. Liu Yiping and Dr. Jiang Zhenyu, he carried out a series of study on the dynamic mechanical behaviors and energy absorption capability of a novel concrete filled with expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads subjected to impact loading. This kind of lightweight concrete demonstrated great potential in the engineered materials arrestor system (EMAS) for stopping the overrunning aircraft safely.

Construction and Building Materials is one of the most famous journals sponsored by the Elsevier Science (a top academic publishing company) in the field of Civil Engineering, Construction and Building. It provides an international forum for the interaction of research and development in Construction and Building Materials. In the Journal Citation Reports (2015), it is ranked as 9th in 61 journals in the field of Construction and Building Technology and 15th in 126 journals in the field of Civil Engineering. The journal is also ranked as 2nd-tier journal (top ~30%) in Engineering Technology by the National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
