Aiming to reinforce the college students’ comprehension of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering, the very subject that they have chosen to major in, on July 16th ,2016, the lecture about “To be a motivational hydraulic man” was to be held to point out the directions clearly for the study of following three years. So as to finish this task, our faculty has sincerely invited Yue’an Li, a specialist that was in charge of Guangdong Province Water Resources Department previously to hold this important lecture. The vice-dean of School of Civil Engineering and Transportation Zhan Wang, along with professor Juxiang Cheng, associate professor Zhaoli Wang, Doctor Luanluan Xue, Doctor Haiying Hu and students who major in Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering in 2015 have attended the lecture together.

The lecture was conducted in order of time, briefly introducing the history and the approaching developing directions of this prospected subject. In the beginning, Mr. Li emphasized that the word “shuili” could only be seen in Chinese, besides, China had a long history of it. He also showed some crucial and foremost ancient hydraulic projects such as The Dujiangyan Dam and Ling Canal. All of us were astounded by the great development of ancient Chinese hydropower projects and greatly admired the wisdom of the ancient pioneers.

Next, Mr. Li presented some development and achievement of Chinese modern hydropower engineering. He specially mentioned the magnificent The Three Gorges Projects as well as the elaborate  the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Simultaneously, he stressed that the recovery of the water ecology began to draw people’s attention and the ways that hydropower developed had become more diverse. The introduction of Ecological restoration project of Tarim River in Xinjiang, Ecological restoration project in Heihe, Restoration of wetland ecological engineering TRAMO were engraved in all of our minds. Mr. Li compared Ecological restoration project of Tarim River in Xinjiang to a bright pearl when he passed there.
When it comes to the future development of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering, Mr. Li said frankly, “These days the projects that were easy to be exploited have almost been finished by our generation and the rest of some have problems hard to be solved. Meanwhile, he pointed out that the hydraulic projects should focus more on the coordinative development with environment. “The shining point of water conservancy during this new period is Water ecological restoration project and Water circulation project, which are supposed to be based on the aim of maintaining the healthy lives of rivers.” And it is undoubtedly a big challenge for the attendance, or more exactly, a great inspiration. At the end of the lecture, we all reached the consensus that only if you had firm base of knowledge could you become more innovative. (Graphic/Department of Hydraulic Engineering)
