On May 27, 2016, the department of Hydraulic Engineering hold an international academic lecture about low impact development in the lecture hall of No.7 building. Professor Guo from Canadian McMaster University was invited to our school and gave a speech which subject was, “ The rainwater management and the facility of low impact development in Canadian city, the thoughts and the key technologies of low impact development in China”. Professor Chen Zishen from the department water resources and environment, Sun Yat-Sen University, Lin Zhenzhao, the section chief from ZhongShan Water Works Authority, some engineers from GuangZhou City Water Survey and Design Institute and GuangZhou City Water Planning Institute were invited to attend this lecture. Wang Zhan, the vice dean in School of Civil Engineering and Transportation, Professor Zhou Xiaowen, the dean in department of hydraulic engineering, Professor Huang Guoru, professor Cheng Xiangju, associate professor Liu Zengmei, Wang Zhaoli, et al and the undergraduates studying in grade 2013 and some graduate students took part in this lecture.
In the lecture, Professor Guo pointed out that the realities of the situation in North American is different from that of China, thus we need different analysis and research toward the storm water management and low impact development in China. The basic principle of the storm water management in North America is to maintain the natural balance of water. During the lecture, prof. Guo mentioned the impact of storm water management caused by the urbanization which is meet the realities of our country. He showed us some advanced storm water managements and mechanical equipments which was used in North America. Meanwhile, he introduced some basic storm water management used in Canada such as storm sewer conduit, grassed swales, water pool and “the green roof” etc. In conclusion, the realities of the situation in North American is different from that of China, the North America consist a large scale of land with a small amount of population, on the other hand, the situation is opposed to that of North America in China. We should consider the real situation when facing the rainwater management problem.
Professor Guo shared his experience of study and research and told us a principle that we should not fear the difficulty and surrender the dilemma and you may feel the glorious of life when you overcome all this predicaments.
