Dr. Kai Wei, from the Northeastern University, USA and Dr. Xujian Lu, from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore visited School of Civil Engineering and Transportation on January-05 for attending the Fifth ‘Outstanding Young Scientist Forum in the South China University of Technology’. The seminar was hosted by Prof. Chaohe Chen, the vice Dean of School of Civil Engineering and Transportation. The attendees include the faculties and graduate students in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.

Dr. Kai Wei is presenting his research
Dr. Kai Wei presented his research entitled ‘Risk assessment of fixed offshore wind power foundation under extreme wind and wave condition’. He introduced his research about the bearing capacity and failure probability for the fixed offshore wind power foundation, especially the conduit bracing foundation under extreme marine and atmospheric conditions. He used ‘incremental wave analysis method’ to analyze the bearing capacity of fixed offshore wind power foundation under the extreme wave condition. The impact of wind-wave coupled mode, loading direction, architecture direction and dynamic effects are also included. He also introduced the performance-based analytical process for the offshore wind power foundation to resist wind and wave. Finally, the wind power station in the northeast coast of U.S. were selected as an example to analyze the reliability and vulnerability of offshore wind power foundation under various performance index.
Dr. Xujian Lu is presenting his research
Dr. Xujian Lu introduced his research entitled ‘a report on the lab and computer study of novel bubble generator based on hydrofin’. This is the work he made in the Nanyang Technological University as a Post-Doc scientist. In order to study the mechanism that reducing and preventing the bubble, he used a high-speed camera to analyze the generation of bubble in the experiment. He also quantified the two-directional current by using optical probe. The Open Foam was used to do the numerical simulation on the bubble generation. The results from the experiments indicate two different bubble generation mechanism under the condition of Fn=2.235.
Communicating between the speaker and the attendees
Extensive discussion and communication was made between the speaker and the audience. After the seminar, Prof. Jingpeng Hu introduced the f Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Lab and the two scientists visited the Lab with the company of Prof. Hu. Further corporation on the research were discussed.
This seminar is one of the ‘Outstanding Young Scientist Forum in the South China University of Technology’ in the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation. The purpose of this forum is for inviting outstanding young scientist to SCUT. Focusing on the advanced international scientific research and crucial technical problem in the field, the forum promotes discussion and communication between scientists and open the viewpoint of the scientists. Further international corporation and communication can be expected in the near future. (Photos: Tu Su, School of Civil Engineering and Transportation)
