To search for new model for training innovative undergraduate talent, with the support of SCET, the Department of Engineering Mechanics and the Peac Institute of Multiscale Science (PIMS), on July 14th, 2015, Yao Xiaohu, chairman of the Department of Mechanics, guided six students from grade 2013, to PIMS in Chengdu for summer practice. With the hearty welcome of Professor Luo Shengnian, director of PIMS, the summer practice lasting for 1.5 months began.
Six students were divided into two groups which were calculating group and experiment group, and they started their research under the guide of professor Luo Shengnian, professor Zhou Xianming and other senior students in the institute. Student Liao Zisheng, Ye Shijia, Sun Yingning and Wei Weibo were in the calculating group whose tasks were to learn to use the institute’s cluster with 43 nodes to calculate on molecular dynamics and first principle, establish glass model that includes Cu crystal band to study the impact of Cu crystal band with different angles on shear zone when Cu and Zr metal glass is stretched. In addition, they had to use phonopy to calculate on phonon (First establish a primitive unit cell model, then dim extend into Supercell. Lastly vasp is used to calculate on force or force constant). Experiment group was consisted of student Lu Xingwu and Li Kangqiao. They first gauged the D-u curve of foamed plastics sample by conducting gas gun experiment, and then derived its dynamic stress-strain relation so as to combine it with the calculating results and summarized the physical law of the sample under shock compression.

After prophase of the practice, students have got used to the pace of the work in the institute and mastered technical methods such as cutting machine, wire-electrode cutting and polishing sample, for processing samples. The whole procedure of processing samples was just as interesting as metalworking experience. Students deeply enjoyed the fascination of technical research as all the experiments brought them a sense of achievement that could never get from the study in the classroom.
