School of Environment and Energy, South China University of Technology(originally named College ofEnvironmental Science and Engineering)originated from the first batch ofenvironmental chemical doctorate grant (1986)in our university.Under the support of governments at various levels and the leadership of the university party committee andadministration,with the joint efforts of all teachers and staffsthe schoolbegan to flourish since 2004. In 2005, the school was authorized to offer national first level discipline,Environmental Science and Engineering doctorate degree.The school was awarded the only key discipline of Environmental Engineering in Guangdong Province in 2007 and ranked 14th in the third round of the National Discipline Assessment in 2012. In 2014, school independently setup afrontier interdiscipline of green energy chemistry and technology.

Through nearly four decades of development, the school has become the leading power in South China as well as among the top-class institutions in national wide with a certain influence in the international community. In the next five to ten years, the school will be turn into an important source of innovation for China in the field of environmental science and engineering, a base of technology upgrading anda highland of internationalhigh-level talents fostering, and entirely entry into the international advanced ranks and form an important influence in the international field.

  

Advantages and Characteristics

1. All-round research inwater, air, solid waste, soil distinctive direction of thedominant discipline.

The school fully develops in the pollution control of the water, the atmosphere, solid waste, soil and other environmental media as well as the utilization of new energy. The school has obviously advantage especially in the typical industrial wastewater treatment,volatilewaste gas control, andcontaminated land remediation. The school also provides technical support for industry clusters. The school’s technology such as new biological three-phase fluidized bed for wastewater, VOCs control andsimultaneous removal of heavy metals - organic matter in polluted soil have reached the leading level in the nation.

2. Intersection of environment and energy, leading the green energy frontier research.

Through the integration of environment and energy, the School forms a new direction -- green energy chemistry and technology. The direction adopts modern high-precision in situ testing technology, focusing on energy conversion and storage mechanisms, energy recovery from waste treatment technology, the research of pollution control in the process of using energy and other aspects. The school also makes important breakthroughs in the recovery of precious metals from waste circuit board using in situ reduction of microbial and the preparation of efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen production, the related results have published in top international journals such as J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. and so on.

3. Focus on key industries pollution control, achieve significant performance in engineering application.

For the desperate needs of national key regional pollution prevention and control, the school has developed technologies in engineering scale, such as waste water and gas treatment in key industries (coking, paper, printing and dyeing, petrochemical, etc.), remediation of mining and farm ‘area, the disposal and resource recovery of desulfurization ash in thermal power plant, and formed a mature government - industry - school - application mode for the transformation, application and promotion of research results, and accelerate the practical application of relevant technologies at last. The above technologies have brought huge benefits to economy, society and environment in more than 200 practical engineering applications, such as Shandong Yantai Economic and Technological Development Zone, Guangdong Guiyu circular economy industrial park, Chongqing Automobile Industry Industrial Park, Tianjin Tiantie Group.  

4. Reasonable teaching staff structure, high-level and diversified personnel training

Relying on the State Key Laboratory, the National Engineering Laboratory, the National Engineering Research Center, the Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province and other national and provincial innovation platforms, the school’s high-level personnel structure is reasonable in discipline and age, including two distinguished professors in the group ofThe Recruitment Program of Global Experts , oneYoung overseas high-level talents introduction plan , two national ** scholars, eight new (cross) century talents of the Ministry of Education, two Pearl River Scholars, three Guangdong province ** scholars and so on. The school adheres to the combination of scientific research and education, and cultivates a large number of high-level talents in the research, planning and management of environmental science engineering and other related areas through the joint training with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, University of California, Santa Cruz, Switzerland Zurich Federal Institute of Technology, the German Max Planck Institute, University of Edinburgh, Taiwan University and other universities.

Through many years’ accumulations and development, the school have gradually formed 5 specific academic discipline directions including: water pollution control and water supply purification, solid waste pollution control and recycle,contaminated ecosystem remediation, green energy chemistry and techniques. Some directions have reached or approximated to advanced world level.


Influences at home and abroad

In recent years, the talents school cultivated have played an important role in areas such as research, technique, management and so on. And they have become the leaders in related industrials. For example, more than 40 students are senior staffs in universities including 985 and 211 project universities and scientific research institutions, more than 50 students are top-leaders or business executive in environmental enterprise. According to the statistical result on the investigation about the evaluation of employers to the graduates, the talents cultivated by our school have high comprehensive quality and specialized foundation. Besides, they are hardworking and honesty. They are well acknowledged by society.

The school has important academic influence among peers at home and abroad. Many faculties are appointed to editors of professional journals or members of professional council at home and abroad.Zhi Dang is the editorial board member of Journal of Agro-Environment Science,and vice chairman of Guangdong Chinese Society of Environmental Science. Yong Hu is the editorial board member of Journal of Environmental Sciences and group leader of National Graduate Education Steering Committee for Professional Engineering Degree. Daiqi Ye is vice chairman and general secretary of Professional Committee for Pollution Prevention&Control of VOCs. Jiang Liu was elected as Highly-Cited Researchers 2014 and 2015 by Elsevier. National and international academic conferences were organized and held. For example, Junyu Zheng launched and organized international academic conference about air quality improvement in rapid economic development region. Chaohai Wei organized the 12th National water treatment chemistry conference. Our school held the 8th National environmental chemistry conference, which is the largest conference in environmental field in Chinese history. We have made great contribution in promoting academic communication and development in environment discipline.

The school provides science and technology support and intellectual support for Chinese economic structural adjustment, industrial upgrading and transformation, especially in South China. It provides technique support service in areas such as industrial wastewater treatment and reuse, industrial waste gas and solid waste treatment and resource utilization for industrial areas in East China, South China, North China and Southwest China. It boosts Chinese environmental protection industry and related industries in the transformation and upgrading, forming a significant influence in the field of environmental protection.
