As one of the scholars who proposed the theory and application technology of paper wastewater closed cycle earlier in China, he focused on the research of industrial wastewater pollution control and new technology of clean production, and proposed the 'paper wastewater closed cycle technology”, 'embedded three-layer network control method of industrial wastewater treatment system' and 'integrated physical-chemical-biochemical treatment method of paper wastewater'. He also published a series of research papers domestically and internationally. His authorized Chinese invention patents were applied in more than eighty paper mills in China, treating a total of paper industrial wastewater of more than 700,000 tons per day, which directly created 207 million CNY of economic benefits for the society through water saving, electricity saving and slag reuse every year, making an important contribution to the realization of clean production, reduction of industrial pollution and protection of our country's environment. The clean production technology and theory of 'closed cycle of secondary fiber paper wastewater and its sludge recycling' advocated in the paper industry has been recognized by the academic community and adopted by paper mills, and the research work in this field is at the leading level in China.

Prof.Ma has presided over the national '863' project, the national water pollution treatment major special project, the national development and reform commission , National Development and Reform Commission Special Fund for Wastewater Treatment in Three Gorges Reservoir Area, the national natural science foundation, the Ministry of Education doctoral fund, the Ministry of Education study abroad personnel fund, the natural science foundation of Guangdong Province, The major science and technology project for 'energy saving and emission reduction' of Guangdong Province, Guangdong advanced talent fund, Guangdong strategic emerging industry key technology research project, Guangdong science and technology plan key project, Guangzhou science and technology research project, Fujian major science and technology project, etc., and presided over the design, engineering installation and commissioning of more than fifty large and medium-sized wastewater treatment projects. He is well-experience in scientific research and practical engineering.
In recent years, he has published more than 40 papers in domestic and international journals, and more than 20 papers have been included in SCI， EI and ISTP. He has been granted 4 national patents (including 2 invention patents and 2 practical authorizations).
He wrote three monographs: 'Waste Paper and its Pollution Control' (China Light Industry Press, 2004), 'Introduction to Environmental Engineering in Paper Industry' (China Light Industry Press, 2005) and Paper Industry Wastewater Treatment Technology and Engineering Examples' (Chemical Industry Press, 2008).
He has completed two national appraisal projects and one provincial appraisal project. He also won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress in 2009, the second prize of Guangdong Environmental Protection Science and Technology Achievement in September 2006, the first National Outstanding Patent Engineering Award in February 2006, the second China Technology Market Golden Bridge Award in December 2005, the first prize of Guangdong Paper Association Science and Technology Achievement in December 2005, and completed one provincial appraisal project in April 2005 'Waste paper and paper wastewater closed cycle application technology' (Guangdong Science and Technology  No. 068). In 2006, he won the first prize of Guangdong Province Science and Technology Progress, the third prize of National Environmental Protection Science and Technology and the second prize of Guangdong Province Environmental Protection Science and Technology. He won the Guangdong Province First Prize of Science and Technology Progress in 2001.
Prof. Ma has a Ph.D in engineering, and is now a doctoral supervisor. After graduating from South China University of Technology in 1995, he stayed in the university and worked for the School of Paper and Environment and then the School of Environment and Energy in teaching and research work. In 2000, he was selected by the 'Xinghua Talent Project' of the university. In 2001, he was in the 'Thousand and Ten Talent Project' of Guangdong Province.
