Approved by Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology (GPDST) in August, 2011, the “Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment and Pollution Control” (“the laboratory”) has been constructed in South China University of Technology (SCUT) since November, 2011. The Chinese Academy of engineering, Tsinghua University professor Jiming Hao serves as director of the laboratory academic committee, and professor Daiqi Ye, Dean of the school of environment and energy, SCUT serves as director of the laboratory. The laboratory was awarded “excellent” rating in the assessment in 2014 hosted by GPDST for provincial key laboratories, through the acceptance in December, 2015, and began a new round of construction.

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment and Pollution Control is a comprehensive and multi-functional platform of science and technology service, research and development with local characteristics. The laboratory conducts basic research, technology innovation, achievements transformation and personnel training in four research directions: air pollution source appointment and complex pollution forming mechanism, environmental catalytic materials and technology, industrial waste gas purification theory and technology and air pollution and health exposure. These research directions respond to the current situation of complex air pollution in Guangdong caused by highly intensive emission as well as overlapping and multiplying effects of different pollutants.

Representative results of the laboratory are as follows: the Pearl River Delta high-resolution emission inventory was applied in coordinated prevention and control of regional air pollution and helped provide air quality assurance during the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, 2010 and the 26th Shenzhen Universidad in 2011; The equipment on regenerative catalytic oxidizer technology, which won the 13th China Patent Excellence Awards, can effectively purify various organic waste gases and reuse combustion heat, and has been used in dozens of waste gas treatment projects; The desulfurization ash utilization technology, can solve the difficult problem of desulfurization solid waste utilization, and can also solve the problem of potassium changing into soluble potassium to help improve the crop absorption in soil acidification area; The air pollution cost effectiveness assessment tool, can systemically assesses the air pollution control strategy cost, air quality and health benefits, and air quality planning assessment. The tool has been officially released by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the use of the world. The laboratory has played an important role in supporting the government, enterprises and people to solve the problem of air pollution in the Pearl River Delta region.
