Embodied AI faces a profound paradox: robots today getting ever more complex and dexterous and foundation models that reason and plan — yet they cannot reliably move through a crowded space without bumping, manipulate a delicate object without crushing it, or use a never-seen-before tool without retraining. The gap is not in the hardware. It lives in the sensorimotor loop — in the physical intelligence required to close it.

This talk uses the System 0/1/2 framework to pinpoint where the gap lives and what closing it requires. System 0 — reflexes and passivity — gives biological agents precognitive safety; foundation models have almost none. System 1 — fast, automatic, contact-mediated — gives biological agents texture, force, and anticipation; robots sense poorly, react slowly, and anticipate weakly. System 2 — deliberate and slow — is where embodied AI research concentrates its effort, producing a choreographer with no orchestra beneath it. Drawing on work spanning intrinsic safety, tactile sensing, semantic-contact fields, cross-embodiment skill transfer, and foundation-model-conditioned impedance control, the talk argues that physical symbiosis — the precondition for Human-AI symbiosis — must be built from the physical substrate up, not designed at the cognitive layer and hoped to propagate down.
