Torrey Lawrence,The Dean of University of Idaho Lionel Hampton School of Music Summary visited our school on December 3.With the potent support from leaders of our university, we have achieved some successes in international cooperative with University of Idaho.
The LionelHampton School of Music is named after jazz vibraphonist Lionel Hampton, whoperformed at the University of Idaho’s Jazz Festival in 1984 and was impressedwith what he saw and was pleased to see the emphasis on education. He pledgedto support the University of Idaho’s jazz festival and help support jazzeducation. The festival was renamed the “Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival” in 1985.The Lionel Hampton School of Music remains the only school of music in theUnited States to be named after a jazz musician. In 2008, the University ofIdaho Jazz Festival received the National Medal of Arts, the United States’most prestigious arts award, from then-President George W. Bush in an East Roomceremony.
The LionelHampton School of Music is accredited by the NationalAssociation of Schools of music. It was founded as a department in 1893, justfour years after the University of Idaho came into existence. It was elevatedto school status in 1969. The Lionel Hampton School of Music is part of theCollege of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. The current director is Dr. KevinWoelfel. The school is a close-knit community of prominent performers,teachers, composers, and scholars who interact closely with dedicated andtalented students. It is a musically comprehensive and nationally competitiveSchool of Music, and provides a learning environment in which students learn byperforming, listening, analyzing, and creating music. Together, the faculty andstudents create an atmosphere of professional awareness, mutual support,collaboration and outreach. The art of music is advanced through hundreds ofconcerts and recitals each year.
The LionelHampton School of Music offers many ensembles in which students mayparticipate. Students are encouraged to form their own ensembles.
