Educational Objectives:
To cultivate “three innovative” (innovation, creation, entrepreneurship) talents with both patriotism and global horizon, excellent “three forces” (learning ability, thinking ability, action ability) and all-round development of morality, intelligence, sports, beauty and labor. After graduation, students can embark on teaching and researching in professional artistic performance organizations, art schools or take on editing, organizing and planning in media departments or cultural institution enterprise. The student mainly studies the basic knowledge of the music theory, theory of musical technique and other related aspects, receives systematic basic music training from theoretical and practical aspects, using the relevant professional knowledge with certain aesthetic perception to analyze reasonably, interpret and write on musical works and some music social phenomena, having the basic ability of music teaching, music research and other aspects.
Graduation Requirements:
1. Proficiency in fundamental knowledge of music, history, literature, philosophy, and possession of a correct legal consciousness, professional ethics, and a strong sense of social responsibility.
2. Proficiency in fundamental knowledge of musical disciplines and the basic methods of musical analysis, and capacity to analyze musical works, phenomena, and development in a systematic and objective way.
3. Have the capacity to analyze and study academic issues concerning music, ability of radiant and innovative thinking, adeptness in both academic and practical writing and acquisition of a solid basis for academic research on music.
4. Have the capacity to make constructive conclusion for the research on musical composition and theories on the basis of Music History, Music Bibliography, Music Aesthetics and Music Analysis, with strict and meticulous logic and accurate expression ability of spoken and written language.
5. Have the capacity to select and use proper computer and media techniques to analyze and settle musical issues concerning technology, culture, communication and society.
6. Have the capacity to give proper analysis and evaluation on musical phenomena, composition and writings on the basis of musicology background.
7. Have the capacity to comprehend and evaluate issues concerning musical culture and making sustainable contributions to musical culture, musical technique, musical media and communication, and musical technological innovation.
8. Have a strong sense of social responsibility, admirable quality of humanities and initiative to observe the professional norms.
9. Have the capacity to undertake the leading role in musical technology, theories and comments in different musical and cultural groups, capacity to do theoretic research and communicate with different people, good physical and psychological quality and international perspective.
10. Have the capacity to launch effective communications with academic peers on the issues within the musical area, including writing paper, making statements in a clear expression. Besides, students need to be proficiency on at least one foreign language for expanding academic vision.
11. Have the ability of literature retrieval, data query and comprehensive review on music area.
12. Creating awareness of self-study and lifelong study, affection for music and art, and perseverance to learn and progress.
Description of Musicology Major:
The department of musicology was first enrolled in 2005 at SCUT, which is a major under the first-level discipline of music that specializes in musical academic studies. Aimed at cultivating a solid musical academic foundation and basic academic accomplishment, and at the same time, based on the platform of the SCUT, it trains the students on competitive awareness, innovative spirit and wide-eyed high quality interdisciplinary talents. There are 12 full-time professional teachers including 4 professors, 4 associate professors who have received national, provincial and ministerial awards such as “Golden Bell Awards”, “Culture Award”, “Lu Xun Prize for Literature and Art” and “Excellent Achievement Award of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Guangdong” in musicology. The School of Arts provides lots of platforms for students including a concert hall, an academic lecture hall, a recording studio, multimedia music classrooms, digital piano classrooms, computer music classrooms, and library information rooms. All of those facilities are helpful for students to learn and study.
Program Features:
The Musicology Major makes full use of the music creation (performance) practice platform of the School of Arts and the facilities of the Cantonese Opera Heritage Center of the Ministry of Education owned by the School to promote the cross-interaction between the discipline and its sister-disciplines, and cultivate high-quality music research talents with broad vision, sense of the times and academic foresight.

4.“Second Classroom” Activities
1. Basic Requirements of Humanities Quality Education
Besides course credits listed in the subject teaching curriculum, a student is required to participate in extracurricular activities of Humanities Quality Education based on the student’s interest, acquiring no less than two credits.
2. Basic Requirements of Innovative Ability Cultivation
Besides course credits listed in the subject teaching curriculum, a student is required to participate in any one of the following activities: National Undergraduate Training Programs for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Guangdong Undergraduate Training Programs for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Student Research Program (SRP), One-hundred-steps Innovative Program, or any other extracurricular activities of Innovative Ability Cultivation that last a certain period of time (e.g. subject contests, academic lectures), acquiring no less than four credits.
