Music and Dance Studies[Academic Master] - Basic Information of Training Program 

I. Training Objectives

Cultivateinnovative, compound high-level talents with qualified political literacy,solid professional foundation, and mutual enhancement of theory and practice.Understand the academic tradition, research status, and development trends ofthis discipline, possess a broad academic vision, strong academic innovationand creative spirit, have the ability to engage in scientific research in thisdiscipline and related fields, master corresponding research methods, andpossess the ability to carry out artistic creation, performance, theoreticalresearch, and artistic practice.

III. Academic System andStudy Duration

The academic system is 3 years. For those whocannot complete their studies on time due to special reasons, the study periodmay be appropriately extended, but the total duration at the university(including leave of absence) shall not exceed 5 years after extension.

IV. Training Methods

1. Training Plan: Postgraduates shall formulatea training plan under the guidance of their supervisors within two weeks afterenrollment and complete all credits according to the courses selected in the trainingplan.2. Mid-term Assessment: Implemented according to the South ChinaUniversity of Technology Postgraduate Mid-term Assessment Measures.3. Practical Component: Complete the social practice component (1 credit),refer to the South China University of Technology Implementation Measuresfor Incorporating Postgraduate Participation in Social Practice into theTraining Process. After completing the social practice work, fill out andsubmit the South China University of Technology Postgraduate SocialPractice Assessment Form.4. Academic Seminars: Postgraduates should participate in more than 10 academicseminars (including 2 cross-second-level disciplines) during their studyperiod. Each time, they should fill out the South China University of TechnologyPostgraduate Participation in Academic Seminar (Lecture) Assessment Form.Master's students participating in international academic exchanges usingEnglish as the working language and publishing an English paper with SouthChina University of Technology as the first affiliating organization, and thestudent as the first author or the supervisor as the first author and thestudent as the second author, can be considered as participating in 5 academicseminars.5. Requirements for academic achievements for Master's students applying forgraduation shall be subject to relevant notices. 

V. Credit and CourseLearning Basic Requirements

Minimum total credits: 38, Number of compulsorycourse groups: 1, Minimum compulsory course credits: 28, including no less than8 credits for public compulsory courses and no less than 20 credits forprofessional basic compulsory courses; Minimum elective course credits: 10,including no less than 2 credits for public elective courses and no less than 8credits for professional elective courses. VI. Compulsory Components

Requirements for academic achievements forMaster's students applying for degrees are as follows:

Master's students must publish at least 1 academic paper related to theirdegree thesis with South China University of Technology as the first affiliatingorganization, and the student as the first author or the supervisor as thefirst author/student as the second author before the defense (at least onemonth in advance). 

VII. Degree (Graduation)Thesis Work

According to the Basic Requirements forDegree Conferment compiled by the Academic Degree Appraisal Group of theState Council, combined with the actual situation of our university's music anddance discipline, we have put forward specific requirements for the degreethesis from the aspects of thesis standardization, thesis quality, and thesiscompletion time.(1) Standardization RequirementsThe topic of the thesis should originate from related research issues inmusicology, composition and composition technology theory, etc. It must analyzeand sort out the relevant theories, musical works, and musical creation of thisdiscipline, and use the results as support for argumentation. The thesis topicshould be novel, the viewpoint clear, the structure reasonable, the levelsdistinct, the narration accurate, the text concise, the argument powerful, andthe conclusion credible. The literature cited in the text must indicate thesource, and the musical examples and charts used must comply with nationalstandards. The master's degree thesis consists of: abstract, main text,references, and appendix. The abstract reflects the core idea of the degree thesiswork, highlights the new insights of the thesis, and strives for concise andaccurate language. The main text generally includes the background of thetopic, research significance, related literature research review, researchargument elaboration, musical work analysis results, etc.(2) Quality RequirementsIt is required to strictly comply with the standardization requirements inthesis writing, literature citation and review, theoretical analysis,experimental data and analysis, etc.; the thesis structure should bereasonable, the levels clear, the logic rigorous, the language fluent, and themusical examples, symbols, and charts should comply with standards; literaturecitation should be accurate and appropriate, the theoretical analysis of thethesis should be systematic and in-depth, the evidence method reasonable, andthe data reliable. Basic research should at least propose or significantlyimprove a theoretical proposition and provide an operational explanation of theproposed theory. The word count for the main text should be 30,000-50,000words.(3) Working Time RequirementsMaster's students should formulate a thesis work plan at the beginning of thethird semester, write a thesis proposal report and pass the review by thesupervisor group. The thesis work time should generally be no less than oneyear. The work process for applying for a degree shall be implemented inaccordance with the South China University of Technology DegreeConferment and Management Implementation Rules (2019 Revision) and theSouth China University of Technology Postgraduate Degree Application WorkManagement Measures (2019 Revision). 

VIII. Graduation and DegreeConferment

Those who have completed the required creditsand passed the graduation assessment, upon approval by the Degree EvaluationCommittee of the awarding unit, will be awarded a Master of Arts degree andissued a Master of Arts degree certificate and a graduation certificate.
