1.Engineering Organization of Molecules: Where Polymers, DNA, and Carbon Nanotubes Meet(Dr. Zhiwei Lin)

Abstract:

Macroscopic properties of materials are not only determined by the chemical composition of molecules, but also largely relevant to their hierarchal and large-scale organization. Engineering molecular systems with exquisite organization control represents a significant and intricate challenge. In this talk, the realization of such control will be discussed through engineering the organization of various molecular motifs ranging from polymers to DNA, and to carbon nanotubes (CNTs). These underlying motifs are sophisticatedly designed with precisely-defined architectures, programmable interactions, and customized functions. The design of motifs will be corelated to their organization control and resultant macroscopic properties. The relationship of composition-structure-property will be systematically revealed. Specifically, this presentation will cover three sections. First of all, precise synthesis and versatile assembly of giant molecules will be discussed. Then, engineering the large-scale organization of nanostructures based on DNA origami will be presented. Finally, I will talk about our recent efforts in DNA-controlled partition, functionalization, and application of single chirality CNTs.

Brief Biography:

Dr. Zhiwei Lin received B.S (2008) and M.S (2011) degree in Polymer Science and Engineering from Beijing University of Chemical Technology. He earned his Ph.D. degree (2016) in Polymer Science from The University of Akron, where he worked on precise synthesis and assembly of functional macromolecules. He then joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at Columbia University as a postdoctoral research scientist, and worked on hierarchical assembly of DNA materials. In 2019, he moved to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for exploring DNA-controlled partition and patterned functionalization of carbon nanotubes, and their various applications. In recent years,Dr. Lin has published 13 (co)first-authored and (co)corresponding-authored papers including four in J. Am. Chem. Soc., three in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., one in Nano Lett. and three in Macromolecules and so on. Five papers were either featured on the cover or highlighted as hot papers in the high-profile journals.
