Abstract:

With the increasing of terrorist attack, wars and civil conflicts, and as weapons improved, developing novel soft safe-guarding materials with enhanced mechanical performance to replace traditional rigid and heavy body armors become an urgent and meaningful work. Though lightweight and high-strength fibers such as Kevlar and polyethylene fibers have been developed and applied in body armors, these materials only resist mechanical punch in a passive way, and cannot sense and respond to an external force, which could not accommodate the demand of next generation smart wearable systems. Shear thickening material is one kind of rate-dependent smart material, which contains shear thickening fluid (STF) and shear thickening gel (STG). One of the main characteristics of ST material is their viscosity and storage modulus increase sharply once the rate of shear stress is beyond a critical value, which the material transforms from soft to solid state. In this talk, we will shear our recent progress on the development of novel multifunctional ST materials and their composites with Kevlar fabrics. The mechanical behavior and ST mechanism of the soft safe-guarding ST materials and ST/Kevlar composite fabrics will be discussed. At last, the application of such materials in sensor and soft body armor is proposed.

Brief Biography

Dr. Shouhu Xuan is a Specially Appointed Professor of Engineering Science at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). He got the B.S. degree from Anhui Normal University (China) in 2003 and received the Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from USTC in 2008. After working as a Post-doc for 2 years at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he joined the Department of Modern Mechanics, USTC, in 2010. He was selected as the council member of Experimental Mechanics of Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics since 2015, received the Young Scholarship of Chinese Rheology Society award in 2016, and supported by the National Science Foundation for Excellent Young Scholars of China in 2018. He published more than 80 SCI/EI research papers as the first/corresponding author, the citation was higher than 3000 with an h-index of 32. His research interests cover the smart materials and anti-impact composites. In smart materials, he focuses on the development of high performance magnetorheological (MR) materials such as MR fluids, MR elastomers, MR gels and investigation of their fundamental mechanisms. For anti-impact composites, he is interested in the design, characterization and application of shear thickening-Kevlar nanocomposites.
