On the morning of November 18th, Professor Zhang Qinyuan gave a lecture entitled Rare Earth Laser Glass and Optical Fiber Laser to the sophomores of Material Innovation Class. To start with, based on the scientific background and significance of laser and optical fiber, Professor Zhang briefly introduced the profound influence of the scientific and technological revolution led by laser and optical fiber on human life, and talked about the principle and the present development of optical fiber laser, which greatly aroused students' curiosity and thirst for knowledge.
In this lecture, Professor Zhang focused on amorphous glass, and successively introduced the basis of glassy and amorphous materials, with experimental methods and theoretical analysis applied in the research. He gave an overview of some advance materials: metallic glass with high strength, high elasticity, corrosion resistance and friction resistance; inorganic glass applied in optoelectronic technology; low-E glass that could effectively reduce indoor heat loss while maintaining good light transmittance. Lastly, Professor Zhang mentioned some important discoveries and inventions of glass (microscope, float glass, etc.) and research hotspots on glass (the top 125 most challenging scientific issues of Science). Professor Zhang also showed us the industrial production process of glass via short videos during the class break.
Professor Zhang presented a colorful glass world to us in this lecture. Students gained a lot of joys while learning professional knowledge.
