", in the symposium held yesterday celebrating the 5th anniversary of Physical Education College, SCUT’s President Li Yuanyuan talked humorously of the past event when Physical Education College was in its founding phase,
      The staff who attended yesterday’s symposium include: Liu Qijin, deputy secretary, SCUT branch of Communist Party of China; Zeng Xiaohong, deputy director of Guangdong Provincial Sports Bureau; Liu Jiangnan, director of Guangzhou Municipal Sports Bureau; and officers of responsible colleges and working units; and the chief leaders and all the staff of Physical Education College.

      During the symposium, President Li Yuanyuan expressed his gratitude to Guangdong Province, Guangzhou Municipal Sports Bureau, and the business community for their long-year support, he also expressed his appreciation of the achievements gained by Physical Education College during the past 5 years.
      He said that first-class university should have first-class sports, and within the past 5 years, Physical Education College has achieved remarkable results in team improvement, education reform and innovation, scientific research, and sports performance, etc. which embody the hard work of all faculty. Sport is always one of the important parts of the overall task of the university. Some first-class sports venues have been constructed through self-financing, and the construction of a swimming pool is an aim to try to accomplish in the future. During the University Game, the ranking of our university has risen from the seventh up to the first place, this game result reflects the continuous improvement of the level of Guangdong university sports, and we are thus deeply encouraged. He hoped that Physical Education College, in promoting its own development, should pay attention to the improvement of sports level of the university faculty and students as well. Looking ahead to future, president Li Yuanyuan hoped that this newly-founded college should be concerned with how to make college a first-class at home, as well as an internationally renowned college in the future. He hoped that all faculty of Physical Education College should maintain the spirit of reform and opening-up, dare to be the first to try, concentrate upon the work of development, try to accelerate the development pace of SCUT, and recreate a new glory in SCUT physical education.
      Liu Jiangnan, the director of Guangzhou Municipal Sports Bureau, on behalf of Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee，expressed heart-felt gratitude to SCUT’s outstanding performance in Asian Games and Asian Paralympic Games, extended his congratulation to Physical Education College for the achievements in the past 5 years. He said sports beautify life, beautify the city, and also beautify the University. SCUT, adhering to the concept of  "first-class university should have first-class sports", has carried out all tasks smoothly and brilliantly, with its leading place in national sports game, students’ good physical health in test, and its national first-class sports facilities. He hoped that SCUT may carry forward the spirit after the Asian Games, and maintain high morale, solid style, and pragmatic attitude, and to obtain brilliant achievements in all undertakings.

 SCUT Students Got 183 Gold, 127 Silver Medals and 75 Bronze Medals
      It is told that Physical Education College, in comply with South China Features and existing sports facilities, has developed curriculum resources, expanded teaching content, constructed an internal-external integration of physical education class system, improved the teaching model, formed a hierarchical Physical Education model with "combination of provisions and optional projects". In the past 5 years, SCUT students have won 183 gold, 127 silver and 75 bronze medals in University Games (Matches) that are higher than provincial level. Approved by the Ministry of Education in 2010, Physical Education College gained the right to grant master's degree in Sports Science as first-level discipline, and the enrollment will begin at the second half of this year. During the past 5 years, 41 articles have been published in Chinese core journals of Physical Education, about 4 times more than that had been published 50 years before the foundation of Physical Education College. Papers by 6 teachers were selected for the 2008 Olympic Science Conference and 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games Science Conference. 11 works or course books have been edited or co-edited. Research funding has been increasing every year, and the total funding for 5 years reaches 1.176 million yuan. Physical Education College has hosted altogether 3 student sports and cultural festivals. Every year, there are more than 20,000 students participating in sports activities organized by the university. Physical Education College pioneers in making the swimming course compulsory for undergraduate students who enjoy a swimming passing rate of 95%, and the passing rate of annual testing of students’ physical health reaches to the Ministry of Education standards of excellence. Within 5 years, the university has built Western Stadium, Athletic Field, North Athletic Field, Basketball Courts, Tennis Courts; and also in University City campus, Stadium, Athletic Field, Swimming Pool, Basketball Courts, which have improved the conditions of sports activities for students. The past 5 years have witnessed some historic breakthroughs in sports, thus creating new glory in SCUT Physical Education, and expanding SCUT sports influence in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and other regions of the country.
      During the symposium, 35 staff were commended as advanced individuals for their distinguished contribution to the development of Physical Education College.
