On Beijing time Aug.5, SCUT student CHEN Ding clocked 1:18:46 to win the Olympic 20km race walking, and broke the Olympic record in this competition. CHEN Ding is a student of sports training major in South China University of Technology (SCUT). WANG Yingjun, president of SCUT, extended congratulations to him on behalf of all the students and faculties of SCUT.
According to statistics, it is the first gold medal of men's race walking won by Chinese athletes in Olympic Games, and also following LIU Xiang’s, it is the second one in men's track-and-field sports by Chinese athletes. Apart from the significance of creating new history for Chinese track-and-field sports, this medal is “special” in “this is the best birthday gift I have got, for counting on Beijing Time, today is my birthday,” as CHEN Ding has mentioned, for he was born on August 5, 1992.
The race took place in London after rain has stopped. CHEN Ding went together with his fellow sportsmen WANG Zhen and CAI Zelin for the gold medal. At the first half of the race, CHEN Ding took the “ walk after” strategy and keep himself within the first group of the walkers, only after the group had walked past 10km that he took the lead, and remain steadily in the first place till to the final destination. He clocked 1:18:46 when he crossed the finished line.
After CHEN Ding has taken the crown, SCUT teachers and students were pretty excited. XIE Jun, associate professor in School of Physical Education whose attention has been focusing on the game, said: "CHEN Ding was extremely diligent in daily training, so behind the gold medal stands his long-time efforts and perseverance." ZHOU Jiali, another student of grade 2011, believed that CHEN's championship will help Chinese people shift their attention on men's 20km race walking, and furthermore, on the development of Chinese track-and-field sports as a whole.
