Jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Central Committee of Communist Youth League of China, the General Administration of Sport of China, and hosted by Tianjin Municipal Government, the Ninth National Universiade was held in Tianjin city during September 8 to 18.
  According to the introduction, 42 athletes, including Olympic Champion CHEN Ding, have been selected into delegation to participate in the Universiade on behalf of Guangdong Province. Among others, SCUT athletes had fought hard and achieved excellent competition results as follows: LIU Hong won the laurel in women's 5000 meters race walking in group B and broke the national record; swimmer ZhAO Jing gained crown both in 100 metres backstroke and 50 meters backstroke; Zhang Zhenyu and Chen Yaxin, Grade 2009 students of sports training major from School of Physical Education, won the second and the third place respectively in male and woman 4x100 meter freestyle relay, Group A.
  Athletes from more than 200 universities have come to this year’s universiade and fight for the “President Cup”, to which SCUT leaders attaches great importance. QIU Xueqing, Vice-President of SCUT, has come to the scene more than once during the training and competition to encourage the athletes, trainers and crew to unites as one and strives for success. And finally, SCUT won the “President Cup” by virtue of brilliant performance.
  It is reported that, in recognition of the colleges and universities that have made outstanding contributions to enhance undergraduates' physical fitness, the Ministry of Education will vote for "President Cup" Award during each Universiade held. The contents taken into consideration for each participating university during voting is composed of three parts: the athletes’ competition results of the target university, the award-winning achievements by its faculty participating in Universiade Scientific Papers Presentation, and the self-assessment of its sports work. SCUT has been the winner of this award for five consecutive years, which ranks top in the number of this prize as compared with other universities. This honor won in this year’s universiade is not only be considered as a new achievement made by School of Physical Education, but can also be seen as a precious gift presenting to the forthcoming of the 60th anniversary of South China University of Technology.
