The Sub-forum of the School of Software Engineering of "Outstanding Young Scholars Forum at Home and Abroad" of South China University of Technology was successfully held

Time:2017-11-28

On the morning of November 27th, the Sub-forum of the School of Software Engineering of 'Outstanding Young Scholars Forum at Home and Abroad' of South China University of Technology invited postdoctoral Wu Qi from the Australian University of Adelaide to make a report entitled 'Vision and Language The Next Generation of AI'. The party and government leaders, academic leaders and some teachers and students of the School of Software Engineering attended the forum.

In the report, Dr. Wu Qi introduced his main research results in the past few years, including Image Captioning, Vision Question Answering, Vision Dialog and Language Instructed Navigation. With the in-depth study of deep learning in recent years, computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP) have been rapidly developed in their respective fields. The goal of natural language processing is to analyze and generate language text, while the goal of computer vision is to understand visual images. Although both these research directions are based on many of the same artificial intelligence and machine learning methods, they have historically been independently studied. Based on past researches, Dr. Wu Qi proposed a solution to combine the two directions and achieved good results. His Image Captioning model ranked first in the Microsoft COCO Image Captioning Challenge in 2015 for several consecutive months, and its VQA algorithm is also in the leading position in the industry.

Dr. Wu Qi is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Robotics Visual Center (part of the Australian Institute of Science) and is the co-founder and CTO of the Vismarty. co. He received his MS and PhD degrees in computer science in 2011 at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom. His main research interests included cross-depiction style object modeling, object detection and vision-language, especially in Image Captioning and Visual Question Answering.

After the report, the participating teachers and students interacted with the reporter on the research direction and questions of their interest, and the atmosphere was very active.

It is reported that the 'Outstanding Young Scholars Forum at Home and Abroad' of South China University of Technology was launched in November 2015. It aims to invite young talents with different academic backgrounds around the world, explore and communicate on international science frontiers, hot research fields and technical issues of industry. Through this platform, we will inspire each other, broaden our horizons, enhance international exchanges and cooperation, and promote mutual development.
