Drivers of industrial vehicles such as those used in the forestry, mining, construction and transportation sectors are exposed to comprehensive levels of low frequency whole-body vibration (WBV) and intermittent shocks. Current epidemiological evidence suggests that exposure to WBV and shocks is related to increased risks of low back pain and degenerative changes in the spine, while also influencing comfort and performance. While several countries in Europe are now recognizing and compensating low back pain and certain spinal disorders as occupational diseases caused by vibration, engineering and administrative controls are needed to reduce the risks of causing harmful effects for the drivers.

While providing a summary of current knowledge on the health risks, standards and evaluation methods of whole-body vibration exposure in vehicles, this presentation will put particular emphasis on the prevention and reduction strategies that can be applied for their control. In particular, the focus will be put on seating and on the various intrinsic and extrinsic factors that are likely to influence their vibration attenuation performance. Through several examples extracted from laboratory and field conducted studies, the major challenges posed by the proper adaptation of seats for drivers having different anthropometric characteristics and in different categories of vehicles will be illustrated and discussed to show how they can be addressed. Finally, the research perspectives with regard to the control of whole-body vibration exposure will be discussed, taking into account currently observed trends and developments with regard to seating.

Paul-Émile Boileau is the Scientific Director at Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail (IRSST). He holds a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Concordia University and has been active in research in the field of occupational health and safety for more than 30 years. As a researcher, he has authored and co-authored more than 200 scientific publications in the area of human response to mechanical vibration and shocks. His role as Scientific Director at IRSST involves the development of the strategic research plan and the scientific coordination of the research fields, and of the statistical surveillance, strategic watch and scientific evaluation activities. Under his direction, IRSST’s Scientific Division is acting as a Collaborating centre of the World Health Organization for occupational health since 2013. In addition to his work at IRSST, he holds an adjunct professor appointment at Concordia University where he supervises the work of graduate students in the areas of hand-arm and whole-body vibration.
