Students of our college won the first and third runner-up of China Daily's "2021 University Journalism Award"

On December 9, the 10th Anniversary of the University Journalism Award and the 2021 University Journalism Award Presentation Ceremony organized by China Daily was held in Hong Kong. Two pieces of work from the School of Journalism and Communication of our school, Dismantling the East Wall to Make Up for the West Wall: Their Future Is Trapped in Online Small Loans and Workers' Self-defense and Counterattack - a group study of Douban Stingy Women's Federation respectively won the Best Economic News Report champion and Best New Media Report third place.

China Daily University Journalism Award (formerly known as Campus Journal News Award) was founded in 2012 and is held once a year to encourage college students to actively participate in campus news reporting, exercise their news writing skills and multimedia production and application skills. It is the only exchange and interaction platform for journalists open to the mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

A total of 54 universities participated in this competition, including Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Renmin University, Nanjing University, South China University of Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, University of Macau, Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan Shih Hsin University, etc. 770 Chinese and English entries were submitted, and 76 of them were awarded. 74 political, business, academic and media elites from across the Taiwan Strait and other parts of Asia served as judges, and selected the Best Campus News Report, Best News Writing, Best News Feature, Best News Photography The first, second and third runner-up in 24 awards such as Photo.

Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, specially recorded a video congratulatory message for the award ceremony. She said that due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the selection activities faced some challenges. However, the organizers have worked hard to overcome various difficulties and successfully held the event, providing a unique interactive communication platform for media students from the mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, which is worthy of recognition.



Li Jiachao, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, mentioned in his speech that there are three rare things in this ceremony. First, the pandemic in Hong Kong has stabilized, so the event can be held offline, and life has gradually returned to normal. Second, the organizer, China Daily, has been holding the News Awards for ten years, and has never been interrupted by the pandemic, Third, the students of the news media who have won the awards care about the society, with a broad vision and keen news judgment, is a rare new force in the news media.


Dismantling the East Wall to Make Up for the West Wall: Their Future Is Trapped in Online Small Loans was the work by Liu Zihui, Zhang Liying, Mo Yitong, and Liu Tianwei from the 2018 journalism class. The early draft of the work was completed at the course of Financial News taught by Professor Li Mei. The work focused on the use of Huabei in university towns and consumption concepts, and carried out in-depth reports in the form of integrated media. Afterwards, Professor Li Mei and Professor Zheng Yudan jointly instructed Liu Zihui's team to further polish the works. They dug deeper and focused on the micro-loan platform including Huabei, using data mining, visual presentation and other technical means to supplement Case interviews, continuous improvement of manuscripts, and finally completed works won the championship.

The students said that they were very honored to win the award. Thanks to the teachers for their guidance from the opening of the topic to the publication of nearly two months, and they are still helping us to consider and revise word by word when the deadline is approaching. Professor Zheng Yudan said that the academy has always adhered to the philosophy of journalists focusing on issues and watching over the society. Every entry in this competition is excellent. Although some works did not qualify for the award, they will be rewarded if they try their best.

Workers' Self-defense and Counterattack - a group study of Douban Stingy Women's Federation was completed by Chen Meilin, Zhu Tingting, and Yang Li from the 2018 Online Communication Class. This work was first finished as the final project for the course “Data Journalism”, taught by Professor Wu Xiaokun, which has been formed after continuous polishing and improvement. This work takes the Douban Stingy Women's Federation group as the research object. By analyzing the consumption concepts, hobbies and geographical distribution characteristics of the stingy people, it shows the different voices in the social environment where consumption is paramount.

The School of Journalism and Communication combines talent training with social practices and academic competitions, rooted in the ideals of journalism, and insists on promoting education through competitions, which ultimately takes up the mission of making contributions to society and the country.
