Bachelor of Arts in Chinese as a Foreign Language

1. PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Bachelor of Arts in Chinese as a Foreign Language is designed for students who wish to equip themselves with interdisciplinary talents in language communication using thorough knowledge of the Chinese language and a deep understanding of the social and cultural aspects of China. The School of International Education (SIE) offers students the opportunity to combine their study with established disciplines in the School of Economics and Commerce (SEC), and the School of Journalism and Communication (SJC). Based on the distinguished record of teaching and research of the following Schools, the program offers 4 programs in Chinese for Business and Trade, Chinese for Tourism, Chinese Language and Communication, and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.

 

In each program, students follow the first two years’ curriculum in studying Chinese; upon acquisition of a language foundation, students may then continue onto the final two years for further systematic study in their chosen programs with Chinese students in SEC, SJC, and SIE.

 

Chinese language courses include: Basic Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, Advanced Chinese, Chinese Speaking, Chinese Reading, Chinese Listening, Newspaper Reading, Basic Writing, Dissertation Writing, Survey of China, Survey of Chinese Culture, Computer Processing in Chinese, Use of Chinese Reference Books, etc.

 

2. PROGRAMS OF STUDY

Chinese for Business and Trade

(1) Course Aim: This program cultivates students excelling in the social and cultural aspects of China and equips students with applicable knowledge in Chinese when coping with business and trade in order to widen their career paths in the modern international business market.

 

(2) Course Structure: Students in this program take Chinese language courses in Year 1 and Year 2 to achieve competent communication skills in Chinese; in Year 3 and Year 4, students proceed with studies in business and trade for deeper specialization in international trade, business development of China and Chinese business culture.

 

(3) Curriculum: Survey of China International Trade, China Economics and Geography, Applicable International Trade, English for Business and Trade, Negotiation in International Business, E-Business, Culture of Chinese Business and Trade, Lectures in Business and Trade, etc.

 

(4) Practicum: Language practice and field work in companies, etc.

 

Chinese for Tourism

(1) Course Aim: This program cultivates students excelling in the social and cultural aspects of China, develops students’ skills in using Chinese for tourism and equips students with applicable knowledge in Chinese tourism industry and Chinese culture, history, geography and customs, etc.

 

(2) Course Structure: Students in this program take Chinese language courses in Year 1 and Year 2 to achieve competent communication skills in Chinese; in Year 3 and Year 4, students proceed with studies in tourism and Chinese culture for deeper specialization in coping with tourism management in Chinese.

 

(3) Curriculum: Chinese Tourism Business, Chinese Tourism Culture, Chinese Tourism Geography, Tourism Marketing, Reception Etiquette, Tour Guide Training, Tourism Hospitality Psychology, Lectures in Tourism, etc.

 

(4) Practicum: Language practice and field work in tourism industry, etc.

 

Chinese Language and Communication

(1) Course Aim: This program cultivates students excelling in the social and cultural aspects of China and equips students with applicable knowledge in the field of liberal arts and social science, and teaches the students the theories and practice of communication in order to widen students’ career paths in cultural communication and mass media communication from global perspectives.

 

(2) Course Structure: Students in this program take Chinese language courses in Year 1 and Year 2 to achieve competent communication skills in Chinese; in Year 3 and Year 4, students proceed with studies in communication for deeper specialization in coping with cross cultural communication process and other operational issues in the media industry by using Chinese as medium language.

 

(3) Curriculum: Chinese Literature, Chinese and Western Cultures, Mass Media, Media Planning, and Marketing, Cross-Cultural Communication, Communication Linguistics, Network Communication, etc.

 

(4) Practicum: Language practice, field work in communication skills, and training in cultural communication in classes of international students, etc.

 

Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

(1) Course Aim: This program cultivates students excelling in Chinese language skills, Chinese culture and linguistics, and mastering theories and methodology of language acquisition, which develops students to be qualified in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

 

(2) Course Structure: Students in this program take Chinese language courses in Year 1 and Year 2 to achieve competent communication skills in Chinese; in Year 3 and Year 4, students proceed with studies in teaching Chinese as a foreign language for a deeper specialization in Chinese linguistics, literatures and culture, etc., therefore, students shall acquire knowledge in the pedagogy and methodology of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

 

(3) Curriculum: Modern Chinese, Classical Chinese, Chinese Literature, Outline of Chinese Culture, Differences between Chinese and Foreign Cultures, Outline of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Pedagogy of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, etc.

 

(4) Practicum: Internship on language teaching, etc.

3. GRADUATION & CAREER

The Bachelor of Arts in Chinese as a Foreign Language requires New HSK Band 5 with scores above 210, the completion of a minimum of 166 credits, dissertation, and a satisfactory academic performance. Eligible graduates can receive Higher Education Certificate and a Bachelor ‘s Degree from SCUT.

 

Graduates with Chinese-language and subject oriented skills are highly sought after in fields of international business and trade, tourism, hotel management, cultural communication, Chinese teachers, education, translating and interpreting, diplomacy and foreign affairs, etc.

 

4. STUDY DURATION

4 years

 

* You are allowed to start from the second or the third academic year depending on your Chinese proficiency. Please refer to Entry Requirements for details.

5. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

(1) For entry into the 1st year: applicants must have graduated from high school, be above the age of 18; no Chinese language proficiency exams are given.

 

(2) For transfer students into the 2nd year: they must have graduated from high school, be above the age of 18; New HSK Band 4 or above, or pass SCUT’s language proficiency entry exam.
