Each academic year has two semesters. Applicants can choose an appropriate course level according to their Chinese
Students are expected to know basic phonetic and tones, and use about 3,000 words and 1,600 Chinese characters. At the end of the course, students should have a basic command in listening, speaking, reading, and writing which meets the needs of daily living and study.
Basic Chinese, Basic Listening, Speaking, and Reading, other optional courses
Students will be able to use about 5,200 words and about 2,200 Chinese characters. At the end of the course students should have a good command in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and can deal with undergraduate courses.
Intermediate Listening, Speaking, Reading, Basic Writing in Chinese, Business Chinese, Newspaper Reading, Website News? Reading;
Students will be able to use about 7,000 words and 4,000 Chinese characters. Students should be able to listen to Chinese radio programs, read Chinese newspapers, and deal with postgraduate study in Chinese. The language skills will enable students to be fully involved in social and work activities such as tourism and business.
Advanced Chinese, Advanced Listening, Speaking, Reading, Applied Chinese Writing, Grammar of Modern Chinese, Chinese Culture, Cantonese, Business Chinese, Modern Chinese Lexicon, Chinese Rhetoric, Literature Conspectus, Chinese movies, other optional courses
II.2012 International Summer Camp
1. Program Overview
SCUT has been organizing summer camp program in Chinese language and culture for nearly ten years. It was solely appointed by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (National Hanban) in the area of South China to run short-term Chinese language and culture course to international students under government scholarship scheme; it was also approved by the Guangdong Provincial Government to be one of the “Chinese Culture Heritage Base”. In recent years, SCUT has offered vary kind of summer camp programs for nearly 1,000 international students.
2. Curriculum and activities:
(1) The program is mainly comprised of Chinese Listening Comprehension, Conversation, Reading, and Chinese culture programs.
(2) Course load: 20 teaching hours per week, 4 teaching hours each morning (8:30-11:50), from Monday through Friday. Students may also participate in afternoon elective activities, such as Chinese Characters, Chinese History, Contemporary Chinese Economy, Chinese Calligraphy, Traditional Chinese Painting, and Chinese Wushu.
(3)Activities: Inner city tours are offered once a week (scenic spots, museums, acrobatics etc.); Weekend tours, such as to Hong Kong and Macau, are available at the students’ own expense.
3. Schedule of Summer Program
(1) The 2012 Summer Program will last for 3 weeks; application deadline: N/A.
(2) We welcome group applications; different types of programs can be designed to cater to the students’ interests.
The 2012 Summer Camp Program will be held at the North Campus (Tianhe
Campus) of South China University of Technology.

7. Completion of the Program
All students will be awarded a certificate after they finish of the full summer course.
III.Intensive Chinese Program
The Intensive Chinese Language Program is designed for the international students who need to improve their Chinese language proficiency in a short period of time. The program focuses on improving student’s comprehensive Chinese knowledge and skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. With the completion of this one-year program, students should have a good command of using Chinese language to conduct deeper communication and discussion, as well as achieving a greater proficiency of Chinese language than that of others to successfully engage in major studies.
Main Courses and Course Load
30 teaching hours per week; Main modules include:
Compulsory: Basic Comprehensive Chinese (Listening, Reading & Writing, Conversation; Improved Comprehensive Chinese (Listening, Conversation, etc. ); Academic Chinese
Optional: Basic/Intermediate Scientific Chinese; Basic / Intermediate IT Chinese; HSK Preparation; Chinese Movie Appreciation; Chinese Songs; Chinese Wushu or Calligraphy, etc.
Program Duration and Semesters
The Intensive Chinese Language Program is a one-year program, consists of two semesters. The Fall semester starts from early September while the Spring semester starts from the end of February. The exact dates subject to the admission notice.
Program Start Date
The program will be held only with 15 students or above, the Autumn semester starts on the 1st of September, and the Spring semester starts in late February each year.
RMB 18,200 per year, RMB 10，000 per semester.
A: The Intensive Chinese Program is applicable to all international students;
B: All applicants without HSK result who apply for degree program are required to attend this program prior to their degree studies.
