Part 1:"lead in" and "dialogue samples":
(1)that would be wonderful为什么用would be?会有什么效果？

Yang: “would”指能够想象会发生的某一情况。例如：Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a roast turkey. 要是没有烤火鸡，圣诞节就不是那么回事了。

(2)How come you haven't stidied for it? 这是什么句型是省略句吗？

Yang: “你怎么还没（为期末考试）做准备呢？” 一般疑问句。没有省略任何成分。

“how come” : how is it that; why: 怎么会；为什么：

例如：How come you're so late? 你怎么会来得这么迟?

(3)aside与apart有什么异同？

Yang:1. aside adv. 在旁边；向旁边； 撇开

例如：He stepped aside to let her pass. 他往旁边站，好让她过去。

Joking aside, we really must do sth. 说笑归说笑，我们真得做点事了。

2.Apart: adv分开，离开；拆开，使成一件一件的；个别，单独

(1)在第七段中，“---before making an application ，as most of----”中
为何不用“because”和“for”，而用“as”？有何区别？

Yang: 表示“因为”时，它们在语气上有一定区别。 “Because”的语气最强，“for”的语气最弱

（2）“the mission of Oxford is to aim at achieving and---”中为何用“be to do”

Yang: 不定式短语做is的表语

（3）Oxford was awarded top marks in six out of ten subjects assessed”中去掉“out”行吗？为何？

Yang: 不行。 “six out of ten”指十个中的六个。 “out” 指“从…中”

（4）“through”和“by”都有“通过---”的意思。有和异同？

Yang：1.“through” （从中穿过），一般指通过空间距离。 例如：went through the tunnel. 穿过隧道

Yang: 在引申指“在走向（成功等）的道路上”无多大区别。但具体地从一个地点到另一个地点时，通常用on one’s way to 。 例如：“在他去医院的路上”应为 on his way to the hospital。

Part 4: passage C
以下句子怎样理解？

（1）第三段中The student body changed, in ways both subtle and dramatic , over the past century. Boys from the south were welcomed back.

Yang：在过去的一个世纪里，学生这一群体发生了大大小小不同的变化。我们迎来了从南方回来的男孩子们。

这里 “body”不是指“身体”，而是指“队；群；团体”。例如：

The House of Commons is an elected body. 下议院是经选举而组成的团体。

The demonstrators marched in a body to the minister's office.示威者们一起向部长的办公地点进发。

(2)第四段and indeed the world's, changing needs.

(4)最后一段 The calls to service now are global and diverse, but so are we.

Yang: 服务的召唤遍及全球，多种多样，但是我们（耶鲁人）同样也遍及世界，（各种）人才济济。

“So” 指代前面的global and diverse.

(1)(第九段最后一行) （第二节第四段最后一行——what is does the sentence “strength to your arm” means mean？
Yang：“strength to your arm”是不太规范的语言，大意为“努力”、“加油”。
(2)what’s the defference (difference)between “frustrated” and “frustrating”？

Yang: frustrated 沮丧的 （指人）。frustrating, 令人沮丧的（指事或物）。试比较：

He is excited.	The news is exciting.
I was encouraged to hear you’ll be giving us your support.	It’s encouraging that so many young players are coming into the team..

(3)"Congratulations on ..."and "Congratulations..."后面加的宾语有什么区别?

Yang: 常用congratulations on something 固定搭配. Congratulations 后不直接跟宾语。
(4) "At a press conference"中的"press"是什么意思?

Yang: press conference记者招待会。press: 新闻界
(5) what is the defference between "access" and "way"?

Yang: access:1) a means of approaching, entering, exiting, or making use of; passage. 通道，入口，出口，使用途径接近、进入、出去或使用的方法手段；通道（是一种手段）

The only means of access to the building is along a muddy track. 进入这座建筑物的唯一通道是一条泥泞的小道。

2)The right to approach, enter, exit, or make use of: 接近权，享用权，出入权接近、进入、出去或使用的权力（是一种权力）

例：has access to the restricted area; has access to classified material.有权进入禁区；使用已归类的材料

way : road, path, or highway affording passage from one place to another. 道路。（为从一地到另一地提供通道的马路、小道或高速公路）
