The School of Physics and Optoelectronics is located in Building 18, Wushan Campus, facing the cultural square, backed by the White Tiger Mountain, and east of the Zhongshan statue, with beautiful scenery. The history of the school can be traced back to the Department of University Physics at the beginning of the school's establishment in 1952. In 1958, the Department of Engineering Physics was established on the basis of the Department of University Physics. In 1962, the Department of Engineering Physics, the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Mechanics were merged into the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics. In 1969, it was adjusted to the Department of Basic Courses (including physics, mathematics, English, engineering graphics and other public courses). In 1979, the Department of Applied Physics was rebuilt. In 2004, it was renamed the College of Physical Science and Technology. In 2008, the College of Physical Science and Technology and the College of Mathematical Sciences were merged into the College of Science. In May 2014, in order to strengthen the science discipline, the College of Science was separated and the School of Physics and Optoelectronics was established. The school has 2 doctoral programs and postdoctoral research stations for the first-level discipline of physics and the second-level discipline of physics and electronics. The discipline of physics is a key discipline of Guangzhou City, and has been ranked in the top 1% of ESI global rankings since 2011. The college has four provincial and ministerial research platforms, Guangdong Optoelectronic Engineering Technology Research and Development Center, Guangdong University Semiconductor Lighting Engineering Technology Research Center, Guangdong Third Generation Semiconductor Materials and Devices Engineering Laboratory, Guangzhou Key Laboratory of Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Chip and Application System, and two provincial demonstration centers of physics experiment teaching and electronic process experiment teaching. The college has a complete talent training chain from undergraduate, master, doctor to postdoctoral. It has two undergraduate specialties of applied physics and optoelectronic information science and engineering (all of which are national first-class undergraduate specialty construction points), and recruits master graduates in five specialties of theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, optics, acoustics, physical electronics, and recruits doctoral students and postdoctoral staff in physics and physical electronics. There are 649 full-time undergraduate students, 170 master students and 83 doctoral students. The college has two departments (applied physics and optoelectronic information science and engineering), one experimental center, and four institutes (acoustics, condensed matter physics, computational physics, and high pressure physics).

There are 111 faculty and staff members, including 83 full-time teachers, 39 professors (31 doctoral supervisors), 28 associate professors and other associate higher titles; Among the full-time teachers, 76 have doctoral degrees, accounting for 91.57% of the total number of teachers. There is 1 double-invited academician, 1 Distinguished Professor of Changjiang Scholars, 2 winners of National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, 3 winners of National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, 2 overseas high-level talents, 1 winner of the National Major Talents Project, 1 winner of the National Young Talents Project, 2 winners of the New Century Outstanding Talents Program of the Ministry of Education, 2 Distinguished Professors of Pearl River Scholars of Guangdong Province, 4 winners of Guangdong Province Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, 2 Outstanding Teachers of Southern Guangdong, 2 outstanding young teachers of Guangdong Province Colleges and Universities Training Program. In the past three years (January 2020-December 2022), a total of 114 new scientific research projects were added, with a total contract fund of 90.95 million yuan, including 8 national key research and development projects, with a research fund of 24.03 million yuan; 32 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, with a research fund of 23.13 million yuan; 5 projects of Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City in key fields, with a research fund of 32.58 million yuan; 1 project of Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Plan Project - Special Support Plan Project, with a research fund of 500,000 yuan; 30 basic research projects of Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City, with a research fund of 5.55 million yuan. 485 papers have been published in the three major indexes, including 4 SCI papers and 44 EI papers; 73 patents have been applied for, and 28 patents have been authorized. The university has won one second prize of the Ministry of Education for scientific and technological progress, one first prize of Guangdong Provincial Natural Science, one China Patent Silver Award, one second prize of Educational Natural Science, and one first prize of Guangdong Provincial Technological Invention. One national first-class undergraduate course and three Guangdong first-class undergraduate courses have been approved.
