School of Medicine Won the Third Prize and Popularity Award in the Claus Cup” Competition

On November 25, 2021, the final round of the South China University of Technology Claus Cup Laboratory Safety Knowledge and Emergency Response Knowledge Contest ended in the International Conference Hall of the Liwu Science and Technology Building. There were one group of first prize, one group of second prize, two groups of third prize and one group of popularity prize in the competition. After a fierce competition, the team from the School of Medicine won the third prize among the 10 teams that entered the final round, and three students, including Chen Zihe, Li Jinchuang and Zhu Minzheng, were awarded 6,000 RMB. The Laboratory Safety Knowledge Contest had two links: popularity voting and on-site competition. The team from the school of medicine won 863 votes through online real name voting and on-site audience voting, becoming the highest vote-getter among all teams, and took the lead to win the only popularity award, receiving 5 extra points for popularity and a prize money of 1000 RMB.

The Claus Cup Laboratory Safety Knowledge and Emergency Response Knowledge Contest was divided into preliminary round and final round. The preliminary round was organized and selected by each college themsleves, focusing on students' theoretical knowledge of laboratory safety and emergency response ability; a total of 10 students performed well in the preliminary round and won the college-level awards, among which three students, including Chen Zihe, Li Jinchuang and Zhu Minzheng, won the top three in the college-level competition and formed a representative team to participate in the final round of school-level laboratory safety knowledge competition.

The final competition includes knowledge of party history, laboratory safety, laboratory waste classification, laboratory safety hazards correction, emergency disposal methods. The questions are single-choice, multiple-choice, judgment questions, practical exercise questions. Theoretical knowledge of laboratory safety is divided into five links, which are History and Sense, Every Second Counts, Everyone is a Safety Officer and Climb to the Peak, and the points of each link will be added up and finally ranked. The top six teams will advance to the final round of the practical exercise, and then the question bank and rules will be notified. There are three links in the emergency operation assessment, namely Golden Four Minutes, Fire Hero and Laboratory Emergency Disposal, and the items to be evaluated include CPR, fire-fighting drill, emergency handling of laboratory chemicals and biosafety-related emergencies, etc. The scores of each link are added up and finally ranked in points, and the top 4 teams are the winners.

After the first two rounds, team of the School of Medicine successfully advanced to the link of emergency response practice, and obtained the highest score in the Golden Four Minutes (cardiac arrest first aid test), thus advanced to the final round of the competition. Finally, the team of School of Medicine entered the winner's list from the 10 teams of the university with an outstanding performance.

The Claus Cup Laboratory Safety Knowledge and Emergency Response Knowledge Contest was organized by the Laboratory & Facility Management Division of South China University of Technology, hosted by the School of Food Science and Engineering, and sponsored by Guangdong Claus Laboratory Systems Technology Co.
