On November 18, 2021, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) unveiled the list of new academicians, including 65 Chinese nationals and 25 foreign experts. SMSE is proud to announce that Professor Yuguang Ma, our academic was elected as Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

We are very pleased to highlight the outstanding achievements of Professor Yuguang Ma to congratulate his election and significant contribution to the development of science.

Professor Ma is committed to the basic and application research of organic polymer optoelectronic functional materials, especially focusing on "the relationship between structure (chemical, aggregation, electronic) and properties (luminescence, laser, carrier migration)”.

He proposed the principle of improving the efficiency of electroluminescent devices by using phosphorescent materials, and developed a kind of material system that greatly increases the efficiency of devices. He proposed "Hybridized local and charge-transfer excited state" (HLCT), “hot exciton" and other new luminescent materials design concepts, promoting the development of a new generation of electroluminescent materials. He also discovered the most efficient molecular arrangement named X-aggregation, which solved the long-standing problem of aggregation quenching fluorescence in the field of luminescent materials. He invented the electropolymerization method of organic light-emitting films, which realized high efficiency, simplicity and patterned films and devices, and changed the traditional device preparation process.

Over the years, Professor Ma has been keen to pursue hot topics with solid basic skills, rigorous research attitude and innovation spirit. He obtained 10 Chinese invention patents, has published more than 470 papers in important academic journals at home and abroad, with citations of more than 14,500 times.

He is the Professor of Cheung Kong Scholars Program, and winner of the National Outstanding Youngster Science Fund. He won the Second Prize of the State Natural Science Award of China in 2009, and was selected as talent of the National Millions of Talents Project in 2013.

As the director of State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices of SMSE, South China University of Technology, Professor Ma attaches importance to undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training. Meanwhile, he has also made great contributions to the discipline construction of organic polymer optoelectronic materials and devices in China.
