Department of Education of Guangdong Province approved the establishment of Modern Traffic Engineering Technology Research Center of Guangdong University (hereinafter referred to as the center) in November, 2010. The center was constructed jointly by South China University of Technology and its cooperative enterprises including Guangdong Transtar science and technology Co. Ltd, Guangdong Communication Information Construction Investment and Operation Co. Ltd and Guangdong Newsoft Technology Company Limited.

The total area of the center is 20,000 square meters and its total investment is 11 million Yuan. There are 123 permanent staffs and 99 floating ones in the center. The center focuses on the key areas in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) including the development of hardware and software of traffic data acquisition equipment, the development of the integrated processing platform of traffic data, signal control technology of urban road and expressway and the development of hardware and software of traffic signal control. The center has taken more than 30 provincial level or above projects, received 40 million Yuan of scientific research funds, gained 4 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards and applied for more than 30 patents. The center has formed a modern transportation industry chain of having proprietary intellectual property rights and has provided engineering and technological achievements for the society, which promotes the technological progress of the modern transportation industry in Guangdong province.
