SCUT Students Made It in the Eleventh Zhou Peiyuan Mechanics Contest

Recently, the result of the Eleventh Zhou Peipyuan Mechanics Contest for College Students (Individual Contest) has been announced, SCUT students won the national first and second prize, of which, the First Prize goes to Zhang Tianyu, and the Second Prize goes to Guo Houzuo, both from the School of Civil Engineering and Traffic of SCUT. In addition, there are other 8 students of the School won the Third Prize, and 37 students won the Recognition Award, making the aggregate number of winners from the School to 47, which is half of the winners in Guangdong region (refer to the CSTAM Contest website http://zpy.cstam.org.cn for list of winners). Thereby, we are qualified to attend the Eleventh Zhou Peipyuan Mechanics Contest for College Students (Team Contest) as the only School from Guangdong participating in the Team Contest.

Zhou Peipyuan Mechanics Contestfor College Students comprises Individual Contest and Team Contest, and any school ranks top among nationwide schools in Individual Contest is qualified to take part in the Team Contest. The Eleventh Zhou Peipyuan Mechanics Contest for College Students (Individual Contest) was held on May 21, 2017. South China University of Technology (SCUT) had the honor to serve as the venue for the Contest in Guangdong region, received 467 candidates from 13 universities including Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology, Jinan University, South University of Science and Technology, South China Agricultural University, Guangdong University of Technology, Shenzhen University, Dongguan University of Technology, Wuyi University, and Foshan Institute of Science and Technology etc., making a new record number of participants.

It is reported that, Zhou Peipyuan Mechanics Contest for College Students is jointly sponsored by Basic Mechanics Courses Teaching Guidance Subcommittee of National High School Mechanics Teaching Guidance Committee under the Ministry of Education, Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and Zhou Peiyuan Foundation every two years. The Eleventh Zhou Peipyuan Mechanics Contest for College Students (Individual Contest) received over 23,000 students from more than 300 schools across 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. The Team Contest will be held at Hunan University during August 10-12, 2017.

The School of Civil Engineering and Traffic of SCUT has always attached great importance to teaching of basic mechanics and tamping of mechanics foundations. With support from the Academic Affairs Office, Engineering Mechanics Department of the School of Civil Engineering and Traffic has organized the past 5 Contests of Zhou Peipyuan Mechanics Contest for College Students in Guangdong region and the First Guangdong Mechanics Contest for College Students which was held last year. This year, our Engineering Mechanics Department has specially organized teachers to provide prep mentoring to participants of the School in three themes: theoretical mechanics, materials mechanics and materials mechanics experiment. Next, we will organize prep training for the Team Contest, aiming at obtaining a better result and wining honor for the School.
