Academician Lai Yuanming gave a report entitled “Progress in Strength Criteria and Constitutive Relations of Frozen Soil”

 On the morning of April 15, Academician Lai Yuanming, executive vice president of the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environmental Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the academic conference which was chaired by the head of Civil Engineering and Transportation. The vice secretary of the China Communist Party of the South China University of Technology (SCUT), Yu Qijun, and relevant persons from the Personnel Department, School of Civil Engineering and Transportation charge attended the conference. About 100 faculty members and students listened to the report.

 Yu Qijun, on behalf of the university, thanked Lai Yuanming for accepting the invitation to give an academic report. He pointed out that Academician Lai Yuanming has made a series of innovative achievements in the theory and application of engineering in the cold area, and made outstanding contributions to the design of the subgrade structure of the frozen soil area of China's Qinghai-Tibet Railway. He hoped that Academician Lai Yuanming could give an advanced guide which could help civil engineering and related disciplines achieve leapfrog development.

 In the report entitled 'Progress in Strength Criteria and Constitutive Relations of Frozen Soil', Academician Lai Yuanming introduced the study of strength criterion, constitutive relation of permafrost and its application in Qinghai-Tibet Railway and permafrost highway. Academician Lai Yuanming showed rigorous scholarship attitude and profound academic attainments, which made a great impression to the scene of faculty members and students. His incisive insights led to the audience enthusiastically discussion.

 The head of Civil Engineering and Transportation hoped that faculty members and students could take Academician Lai Yuanming as an good example and make SCUT to be a first-class university (Editors: Mu He-Qing, Zheng Zhen-Jie).

1. The “New Technology for Modulating and Controlling Ground Temperatures of the Roadbed in Permafrost Regions and for Mitigating Frost Hazards” was awarded with the 2nd Class of National Technical Invention Award of China by the Chinese State Council in 2010.

2. “Qinghai-Tibet Railway Engineering” was awarded with the Special Class Prize (higher than the First Class Prize) of the National Science and Technology Progress Award of China by the Chinese State Council in 2008 (one of prize winners).

3. “Prediction of Frost Hazards of Roadways and Tunnels in Cold Regions and Their Integrated Key Mitigative Techniques” was awarded with the 2nd Class of the National Science and Technology Progress Awards of China by the Chinese State Council in 2005.

4. “Prediction of Frost Hazards of Roadways and Tunnels in Permafrost Regions on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and The Combined Key Preventive Technologies” was awarded with the First Class Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Gansu province in 2004.

5. Doctoral dissertation, titled on “Nonlinear Analysis for the Coupled Problem of Temperature, Seepage and Stress Fields in Cold-Region Tunnels”, was awarded by the Distinguished Hundred Doctoral Thesis Award of State in 2002.
