May 28th-29th of 2016 held the 12th Annual Conference of China Association for Intercultural Communication (CAFIC). A seminar on Intercultural Communicative Competence and Cultivating International Talent was held at the Dalian Foreign Studies University. Professor An Ran, Associate Professor Li Bing, Instructor Zhang Shihai, Instructor Bu Jiahui and a graduate student Chen Wenchao attended the meeting.

This conference aimed to discuss the cultivation of intercultural communicative competence from the perspective of globalization. The plenary session was divided into five thematic research groups, respectively: Intercultural Communication and Cooperation within Intercultural Communication, Multilingual Diplomacy, Talent Cultivation and Intercultural Communication Ability, Intercultural Communication and Foreign Language Education “Intercultural Communication Literature, Linguistics and Translation Studies”, and “Chinese International Education Studies”. Since 2010 when SCUT hosted CAFIC’s annual meeting about Research Topics in Chinese Education , the number of researchers in this area gradually increased, the relevant research results continue to grow, and ever since three venues have held conferences about this topic.

Professor An Ran conducted the topic of "Research of Chinese Language in International Education" and gave a keynote speech entitled Research on Social Support for Foreign Students by WeChat. Professor An Ran and her graduate student Chen Wenchao combined social media and intercultural adaptation research. Through quantitative analysis and in-depth interviews with foreign students and managers, the authors analyze WeChat’s competence as a social support for international students and the number of publicly proposed recommendations. The speech received much attention and praise from participants. Li Bing, Zhang Shihai and Bu Jiahui respectively read the conference papers and exchanged in-depth discussions with the participants. The conference discussed the problem of intercultural communicative competence training in the context of globalization from multiple perspectives. It not only highlighted problems within the development strategy of the country, but also paid attention to research about teachers' classroom experiences and extensively discussed other content.

On the evening of the 28th, Professor An Ran, donning her Executive Director hat, attended the CAFIC Executive Director Meeting to discuss matters.

Hosted by CAFIC, the conference is a platform for exchange, communication among experts and scholars engaged in the study of intercultural communication and educational practice in China. The study of intercultural communication theory is closely related to the practice of education in China and the overlaps between the two areas are very strong. The related research results can provide a direct reference for students' teaching and management. However, for the time being, the research on intercultural communication theory in China still lags behind. Much prospective development still exists in this field. Through exchange and discussion at the meeting, researchers sought to understand the forefront of academic development, to strengthen domestic and foreign counterparts in  academic exchanges and mutual learning, which continue to explore and promote development of intercultural education and foreign exchange.
